Welcome to the Numeric and Geospatial Data Services in Academic Libraries Interest Group's home on ALA Connect.  For short, I thought we could call this DIG (for Data Interest Group).  Our purpose is:

Welcome to the Numeric and Geospatial Data Services in Academic Libraries Interest Group's home on ALA Connect.  For short, I thought we could call this DIG (for Data Interest Group).  Our purpose is:

To bring together ACRL members who are actively engaged in the planning for, oversight of, and/or provision of data services within academic libraries. Providing patron support in the acquisition, storage and use of numeric and geospatial data is fast becoming an expected add-on to public and technical services in academic and research libraries. The responsibility of this group to provide a forum by which librarians and academic library staff engaged in these services can provide/receive insight into, examples of, and training on how data services are developed and delivered. This group may also serve as a bridge between other professional associations dedicated to the provision of data services in research environments (e.g. IASSIST and APDU).

This will be our official communication space.   As we are brand new, we are not yet listed on the ACRL Interest Groups to choose from when requesting membership in ACRL.  I anticipate this will happen soon.  In the interim, I invite you to "Watch This Space" by subscribing (see right-hand menu).

How can I access sessions?

Links have been posted to the conference's schedule page, where you'll find an abridged schedule at the top, followed by a link to a document with extended session descriptions. We ask that you not sign into a room until 15 minutes prior to a session.

What can I do between now and the conference?

Here are some blogs we really enjoy about data and statistics:

  • FiveThirtyEight.com - from forecasting election results to figuring out which percentage of the ESPN OJ Simpson documentary series contained archival footage, this is a great source for thoughtful analysis and great visualizations. Led by Nate Silver.
  • Flowing Data - A blog on data visualization by Nathan Yau, whose book Data Points is one of our team's favorites. Lots of imaginative examples of visualizing anything from America's consumption of various foodstuffs to predictions of when you will, ummm, die. (Note: dying of boredom from our upcoming webinars is not an option.)

“What is Data Literacy?”: a definition from Adam Beauchamp (http://databrarians.org/2015/02/what-is-data-literacy/)

To paraphrase Gal and apply his definition to Cobb and Moore’s three phases of statistical analysis, the simplest definition of data literacy is the ability to interpret, evaluate, and communicate statistical information. Central to this ability is an understanding of how statistical information is created, encompassing data production, data analysis, and formal inference. In other words, data literacy includes the ability to evaluate the modes of data production, including the underlying research design and means of sampling, and how this impacts the possible findings. Data literacy also includes the ability to interpret the results of formal inference tests, including confidence intervals and the probability that findings are representative of a population rather than coincidental to the given sample. And finally, data literacy includes the ability to interpret and communicate about the descriptive statistics learners and citizens encounter everyday, from unemployment rates to political polling.

Discussion Report of the Statistical Sources on the Web Guide working group

Chad Kahl, who chaired that group, submitted a final report for the working group, which is attached. Regina Raboin, Science Research & Instruction Librarian from Tisch Library of Tufts University, will share with us about 1) why/how Tisch Library launched DM services, 2) what the library has done to market them and grow them, and 3) what the library’s plans are for the future to sustain these services well. After Regina’s brief presentation, we will open up for our members’ discussion around DM marketing topic.
  2. Chad Kahl from LPSS will join us and introduce the project of possible resurrection of Grace York’s Statistical Resources on the Web Guide.
  3. Review draft for “ACRL Plan for Excellence Implementation Reports”.
  4. Updates on research data related conferences/events from members.

Description: 

Over the last decade, our Data Science team at Harvard's Institute for Quantitative Social Science has been iteratively developing Dataverse, a data repository framework to facilitate and enhance data sharing, preservation, citation, reuse and analysis. The open source Dataverse software has been installed as a research data repository at multiple institutions worldwide. The Dataverse repository hosted at Harvard University is open to all researchers, and currently has over 53,000 data sets containing 734,000 files. During the last two years, based on user feedback and community practices, we have implemented extensible data publishing workflows and effective ways to link publications to data. In this talk, I'll present what we have learned in the process, and how it has helped us define data publishing.

Our Interest Group’s meeting during ALA Annual has been scheduled to be on Saturday, June 28, 2014, 4:30pm - 5:30pm, at BALLY-Palace 3 (Bally’s Las Vegas).

 

Based on our members’ requests and suggestions from previous meetings/gatherings, I am very happy to announce that we will have a speaker to inspire our discussion on topic of “Marketing Data Management Services” at this meeting.

Discussion DIG 2014 Virtual Meeting Report

Nine of DIG members attended our virtual meeting on February 19, 2014.

Nine of DIG members attended our virtual meeting on February 19, 2014.

We introduced ourselves to each other with detail information about the data services and programs that we are involved with. Each of us is providing different types of data services, for example, data reference services, data collection services, data analysis software packages and GIS training workshops, and GIS project assistance. We also had the opportunities to ask each other some questions. There are two libraries have statistical consulting services within the library to which data librarians could refer students for questions about statistical methodologies. In one library, subject specialists with solid statistical methodology background and well-trained graduate students are serving as consultants. In another library, the consulting team is composed of undergraduate students with solid statistical trainings.

Our members shared upcoming program/conference/events information, and experienced data librarians suggested organizations for new data librarians to participate:

  • 2014 ICPSR Summer Program course: “Providing Social Science Data Services: Strategies for Design and Operation” [https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/sumprog/courses/0041]: This year, the course will be taught by Bobray Bordelon, Princeton University; Jane Fry, Carleton University; and Ron Nakao, Stanford University. Many of us have been students of this course in  previous years and had a great experience.
  • IASSIST (International Association of Social Science Information Services & Technology) is a good organization for data librarians to join and participate. The website [http://www.iassistdata.org/] of the organization has resources on various data related topics, and the organization also has a peer reviewed OA journal: IASSIST Quarterly. The listserve discussion of the organization has been very active with members frequently raising questions and eagerly answering each other’s questions. Sometimes interests groups are formed directly as a result of good discussions or identified similar interests among members around a topic. 
  • APDU (Association of Public Data Users) is another social science data related organization with only institutional membership, but they offer very good informational webinars frequently.
  • NCLA (North Carolina Library Association) Government Resources Section has a great webinar series “Help! I’m an Accidental Government Information Librarian”, which offered monthly free webinars on government resources. 

We then discussed how we are going to organize our 2014 ALA Annual Meeting, and possible 2015 ACRL program.

Members suggested that for ALA Annual this year, we could have speaker(s) talk briefly and then engage all our members to have discussions. It’s not going to be a formal program, just a more focused discussion around a topic. One topic that has been identified for this year is, “how to market data management services.” The speaker(s) need not talk only about successful strategies, lessons and experiences are all valuable to share.  Please let us know if you would like to be the speaker or you have someone to suggest that we could invite.

Considering the possibility of proposing a program for 2015 ACRL Meeting, members suggested that we might want to co-sponsor a program with other ALA/ACRL sections/groups that have similar interests, for example, LPSS and BRASS. The strategy of co-sponsoring might be that we plan the session and then have other sections/groups simply endorse it. Member suggested that for this kind of bigger/formal program, we could focus more on data content, for example, international comparative of data products/collections/libraries, or some focused small data archives/libraries, for example, unique topical data archives from ICPSR, and we could even invite some vendors/producers to talk about their products. Other topics that members are interested in are established data management/curation services, for example, UCSD’s Data Curation Services and University of Virginia’s Scholar Lab. Please let us know if you have any further suggestions or ideas.

Current and future conveners could start planning now, and attend the upcoming free webinar, “Tips for ACRL 2015 Proposals,” on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 (11:00 a.m. Pacific | 12:00 p.m. Mountain | 1:00 p.m. Central time | 2:00 p.m. Eastern (60 minutes)).  The due date for submitting a proposal is May 9, 2014.

Adobe Connect Instructions:

  1. Adobe Connect has recently updated their software. When you log-in, you may notice a screen asking you to install the add-in. If you click “yes,” the update will install in about 20-30 seconds. You may need to complete the audio setup wizard after installing the add-in.
  2. Use Firefox, if possible -- Internet Explorer and Chrome seem to have some issues.
  3. Make certain you have an updated version of Flash.
  4. Only use PDF or PPT files.
  5. You will need a headset for VoIP. If you are using a machine with a built-in microphone, you will need to disable the built-in microphone and enable the microphone on your headset (a USB headset is best).
  6. Once you enter Adobe Connect (you will sign in as a guest -- so no log-in is needed), you will need to click on the speaker and microphone icons to activate -- both need to be GREEN.
  7. Please allow a few minutes to get in and test your audio, etc. before the start time.
  8. To test audio, click on ‘Meeting’ in upper left corner. Choose the audio set-up wizard.  Click through every step, making sure the dropdown is set to your USB headset, and click through to the very last screen.  IMPORTANT: You must click all the way through the audio wizard in order to save your selections.
