Discussion ARL Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce deadline June 14th

A reminder that a week from Friday, June 14th, is the application deadline for the ARL Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce (IRDW). The IRDW is an ARL member funded diversity recruitment program that provides a suite of financial benefits and developmental opportunities for master of library and information science students from traditionally underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups with career interests in research libraries.

Discussion $1000 scholarship for library school - ABOS outreach/bookmobile librarianship

The Association of Bookmobile & Outreach Services, an affiliate of the American Library Association, offers annual awards that recognize outstanding service, support for conference attendance, and the education of a student currently enrolled in a Library Science degree program. 

The Association of Bookmobile & Outreach Services, an affiliate of the American Library Association, offers annual awards that recognize outstanding service, support for conference attendance, and the education of a student currently enrolled in a Library Science degree program. 

This year’s ABOS annual conference will take place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, from October 9 – 11. The Bernard Vavrek Scholarship provides $1000 to a library school student interested in outreach and bookmobile services. Please share the following information with your staff and the students in your library school.

Program/Workshop Proposals Sought for 2013

 8th National Conference of African American Librarians

 

The Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) is seeking educational and thought-provoking program and workshop proposals for the 8th National Conference of African American Librarians (NCAAL) “Culture Keepers VIII: Challenges of the 21st Century: Empowering People, Changing Lives” to be held August 7-11, 2013, at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. The deadline for proposal submissions is October 31, 2012.

The conference serves as a national meeting for professionals in all areas of the information industry and provides opportunities to discuss varying issues, formulate new visions, celebrate achievements and share best practices, as issues relevant to libraries are addressed. NCAAL holds a reputation for excellence as the largest conference devoted to African American librarianship and those librarians serving African American and/or minority constituents. The multi-day event offers top-quality education programs, and social events that include author luncheons, receptions, networking opportunities, and a bustling exhibits hall featuring the latest in products and services.

Presentation formats include:

Conference Sessions/Panels/Workshops bringing together as many as three presenters into a cohesive 90-minute conversation of evolving issues, current topics, or innovative ideas;

ConverStations providing conference attendees with 60-minute forums for discussion on timely, relevant topics for library professionals; and

Poster Sessions, 60-minute time blocks presented twice during the conference, as an interesting and visually inspiring way of presenting research, services, projects, and issues in the field.

Overall suggested topics include, but are not limited to: Empowering People, Changing Lives: Leadership and Management; Empowering People, Changing Lives: Innovation and Creativity; Empowering People, Changing Lives: Health & Wellness; Empowering People, Changing Lives: Diversity and Cultural Heritage; Empowering People, Changing Lives: Advocacy, Outreach, and Community Engagement; and Empowering People, Changing Lives: Collections, Programs, and Services.

Proposals must be submitted online at http://ncaal.kla-itrt.org/ . Conference committees will evaluate proposals for relevance to the conference theme, clarity, originality and timeliness. Presenters will be required to register for the conference (complimentary registration may be requested for non-librarian presenters); assign first publication rights to BCALA; and provide both hard-copy and electronic versions of presentations by the deadline date.  In accordance with American Library Association (ALA) practices, librarian presenters cannot receive honoraria nor have expenses reimbursed for presenting conference programs. Non-librarian presenters may be eligible for per diem, and/or travel reimbursement. All requests for reimbursement or honorarium are subject to approval by the program committee. Acceptance of the proposal does not guarantee funding.

Discussion Apply by October 25 for Muslim Journeys Bookshelf

Is there a need in your library’s collection, and in your larger community, for authoritative and accessible resources about Muslim history, beliefs, and culture? Through its Bridging Cultures initiative, the National Endowment for the Humanities seeks to introduce readers to diverse perspectives on the people, places, histories, beliefs, practices, and cultures of Muslims in the U.S. and around the world.

Is there a need in your library’s collection, and in your larger community, for authoritative and accessible resources about Muslim history, beliefs, and culture? Through its Bridging Cultures initiative, the National Endowment for the Humanities seeks to introduce readers to diverse perspectives on the people, places, histories, beliefs, practices, and cultures of Muslims in the U.S. and around the world.

The deadline for public, academic, and community college libraries to apply for the NEH/ALA Bridging Cultures Bookshelf on Muslim Journeys is October 25th! Please visit www.programminglibrarian.org/muslimjourneys to begin your application today, in order to receive a collection of resources valued at more than $1,000. Up to 1,000 libraries and state humanities councils will be selected to participate, and applications are being actively recruited. Please share this message with anyone who may be interested in participating!

Grant recipients will be required to present a minimum of one program for public audiences, focusing on the theme and materials. In January 2013, successful grant applications will receive the Bookshelf collection, as well as an invitation to apply for an upcoming round of $3,500-$4,500 cash programming grants. These grants will support scholar-led reading and discussion programs that incorporate books from the Muslin Journeys collection. Only libraries that receive a Bookshelf grant will be eligible to apply for a cash award in 2013.

The 2012 Spectrum Leadership Institute is being held June 21-25 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County (http://orangecounty.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels-orangecounty/index.jsp?null) in Anaheim, CA. 

The following information is for the 2011-2012 Spectrum Scholars attending their Spectrum Leadership Institute in 2012.  Spectrum alumni please see events open to alumni at http://connect.ala.org/node/180137.

The 2012 Spectrum Leadership Institute is being held June 21-25 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County (http://orangecounty.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels-orangecounty/index.jsp?null) in Anaheim, CA. 

  • Programs listed on the Day by Day Schedule (see attached program) are REQUIRED unless otherwise noted. You have free time on Saturday and Sunday to attend ALA Annual Conference sessions of your own choosing.  Your Spectrum program book (attached) includes a list of ALA Conference Programs that might be of interest.  Don't print this schedule, you'll receive one at our first session on Thursday. 
  • I encourage you to use the online Conference Scheduler to manage your conference schedule (http://ala12.scheduler.ala.org/).  Links to all of the individual Spectrum Institute Sessions are included below for your convenience in adding them to your schedule. 
  • Beginning on Friday morning and continuing through the conference over the weekend, there will be free shuttles between hotel sites for the ALA conference and the convention center.
  • Wear your badge at all times. You will receive your ALA Conference badge at the opening of the Spectrum Institute, please use it as your name tag during the Institute and you are required to wear a badge when attending ALA conference programs and the Exhibits. If you have on your own purchased any tickets for special events they should be with your badge, or you may purchase tickets for special events from the Registration area in the Convention Center.
  • Please wear the Spectrum ribbon/promo materials you receive at the Institute throughout your ALA Annual Conference. Thank you for helping to promote the Spectrum Scholarship Program!
  • Cognotes is the official conference news publication and is readily available throughout the convention center. Check it out!
  • Don't be afraid to ask strangers questions. And don't forget that some of your fellowScholars have conference experience, it's ok to ask questions and to volunteer information.
  • Don't be too shy about looking at people's badges or having people read yours. People just want to get to know one another, that's what conference is very much about.

Online Doc Spectrum Institute - What to Wear

Attire for the Spectrum Institute

Dress for the Institute is comfortable business casual attire - we have long days and the meeting rooms can be chilly so I encourage layers. You are really welcome to wear what you feel most comfortable in, just note what you're going to feel most comfortable in amidst a room of future employers and colleagues. Be sure to pack at least two professional outfits - one for your opening session on Thursday, one for Sunday's Spectrum donor luncheon and the Association Options Fair.  The opening session is more festive less business, but dress in a manner that you'll feel confident mingling with leaders in the profession. Bring comfortable dress shoes and an extra pair to slip into should you develop blisters.

Note that your airline may have new baggage restrictions and fees for checked luggage. I encourage you to pack conservatively to avoid any concerns at the airport. For those of you with extended stays, there is laundry service in the hotel if you wish to use it and there may very well be a laundromat somewhere nearby. Please feel free to add conference packing tips in the comments should you have any. Consider packing pieces that can be re-worn and mixed and matched with items that take up less space to conserve suitcase space. Lightweight options that don't wrinkle are also helpful, but our hotel will have an ironing board/iron in the room as well as hairdryers.

Attire for Annual Conference

In general same advice as for the Institute sessions: layers, comfortable shoes and bringing a back-up pair of shoes that won't hit your sore spots in the same place. Conference just allows you to be slightly more anonymous and you won't be pushed as aggresively into networking situations.  We have a real array of why attendees might be at conference and how they dress often reflects their reasons for being there. Exhibitors are often the most professionally or corporate dressed; ALA members serving in leadership roles or on committees might opt for more professional business casual as they will be interacting with colleagues and other leaders often; general attendees visiting programs and the exhibits primarily may choose to be more casual. Special events like literary awards banquets may require dressier attire.

  • Business cards - if you have them, great to share with speakers and vice versa. If you don't have business cards already we suggest collecting cards from people you meet, taking good notes about how you want to follow-up, and sending prompt and carefully proof-read follow-up emails shortly after the Institute to continue networking.
  • Two professional outfits - one for Thursday and one for Sunday. Think a little more casual than an interview outfit but along those lines.
  • Comfortable business casual attire for the rest of the Institute & ALA, we have long days and the meeting rooms can be chilly so I encourage layers.
  • Comfortable shoes.
  • Ear plugs if you are a light sleeper and like to use them.
  • Every room comes with a hair dryer and iron/ironing board.
  • Healthy snacks. Catered meals are noted on the Spectrum Leadership Institute schedule of events, all will be buffet with vegetarian and vegan options. That said, conference days are long and hotel catering is not always the best good energy food. We suggest packing or purchasing healthy snacks (fruit, nuts, granola bars) to keep your energy high. You may inquire with the hotel concierge about places to shop nearby for food and any other necessities you've not got.
  • Cash for tips (bell man and housekeeping at the end of your stay) and emergencies. Also budget to pay your baggage fees and ground transit from the airport to the hotel.
  • A swimsuit if you like to swim. Workout clothes if you like to workout. Please visit the specific hotel website for information on what amenities are available in the hotel and local area.
  • Your camera if you have one. If you do take pictures from time to time, chances are you'll be inspired to do so during the Institute and while visiting the conference city. I very, very much hope you will also consider sharing your photos with me after conference (digitally) so that I may include them in our Spectrum albums. You are also encouraged to post them to the Spectrum Fan page on Facebook.
  • Sunscreen and/or hat.
  • Your laptop if you want to bring it to take notes during sessions.  Wi-Fi is not guaranteed in our meeting space but there is wi-fi in the Convention Center and may be other free hotspots in our area.
  • Reusable water bottle.
