Call for Proposals: Spectrum Institute Session at ALA Annual

What would you like to have known as a new library professional? What have you learned about professional branding, constructing a career strategy, identifying mentors, and navigating the workplace?

The ALA Spectrum Institute is looking for presenters to share their knowledge and experiences with current Spectrum Scholars at the 2014 ALA Annual Conference June 26th - 30th in Las Vegas, NV.

We seek stimulating proposals for 1.5 - 2 hour panel sessions or workshops that speak to geographically and racially diverse Master-level students transitioning to professional positions. All speakers must be registered for the ALA conference. Primary speaker must be a past recipient of a Spectrum Scholarship.

Deadline for submission is March 17th 2014.

Discussion Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL) Applications

The William H. Hannon Library has received a three-year grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to offer a nine-day continuing education opportunity for academic and research librarians. Each year, 21 librarians will receive instruction in research design and a full year of support to complete a research project at their home institutions.

The William H. Hannon Library has received a three-year grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to offer a nine-day continuing education opportunity for academic and research librarians. Each year, 21 librarians will receive instruction in research design and a full year of support to complete a research project at their home institutions. The summer Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL) is supplemented with pre-institute learning activities and a personal learning network that provides ongoing mentoring.  The institutes will be held on the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.  For more information about the project, including the project partners, the School of Library and Information Science at San José State University and the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC), please see the project website:  http://irdlonline.org.

The first institute will be held on June 16-26, 2014, with arrival on campus on Sunday, June 15, and departure on Friday, June 27.

We are now issuing a call for applications for the IRDL 2014. We are seeking novice librarian researchers who are employed by academic libraries, or research libraries outside an academic setting in the United States to participate in the institute. We define novice researchers as those who may have conducted research but have not yet had an article published or a presentation accepted by a peer-reviewed publication or conference; librarians who have presented peer-reviewed poster sessions will be eligible. Librarians of all levels of professional experience are welcome to apply.

We seek librarians with a passion for research and a desire to improve their research skills. The project is designed to bring together all that the literature tells us about the necessary conditions for librarians to conduct valid and reliable research in an institutional setting. The cohort will be chosen from a selective submission process, with an emphasis on enthusiasm for research and diversity from a variety of perspectives, including ethnicity and type and size of library.

The Advisory Committee, comprised of librarians with research experience in a variety of settings, will use an open review process to select participants who will travel to Los Angeles, California, participate in all institute activities, and conduct a research project during the 2014-2015 academic year. The online application requests a proposed research project that will be revised at the institute and will be the basis for the study to be completed in the coming year.

Selection criteria:

  • Significance of the research problem to the operational success of the applicant’s library or to the profession of librarianship;
  • Clarity of the proposed methodology;
  • Enthusiasm for research and desire to learn;
  • Commitment to the year-long process of communicating with other participants and conducting the proposed study.

We will be accepting applications from December 1, 2013 to February 1, 2014.

Scholars accepted to the Institute will be notified by March 1, 2014.

Discussion Code4Lib 2014 Conference

For the Code4Lib 2014 Conference, 9 scholarships have been sponsored to promote diversity.

CLIR/DLF has sponsored 5 scholarships, EBSCO has sponsored 2 scholarships, ProQuest has sponsored 1 full scholarship, and Sumana Harihareswara has sponsored half a scholarship which was matched by ProQuest. All sponsors have left it up to the discretion of the Code4Lib 2014 Scholarship Committee for how to award these diversity scholarships.

For the Code4Lib 2014 Conference, 9 scholarships have been sponsored to promote diversity.

CODE4LIB 2014 DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS ELIGIBILITY, CRITERIA, AND REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for a scholarship, an applicant must be interested in actively contributing to the mission and goals of the Code4Lib Conference.

- Four scholarships will be awarded to any woman or transgendered person.
- Four scholarships will be awarded to any person of Hispanic or Latino, Black or African-American, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, or American Indian or Alaskan Native descent.
- One scholarship will be awarded to the best remaining candidate who meets any of the previously mentioned eligibility requirements.

Eligible applicants may apply based on multiple criteria, but no applicant will receive more than one scholarship. Past winners of any Code4Lib scholarship are not eligible for a scholarship.

The scholarship recipients will be selected based upon their merit and financial needs.

Scholarship recipients are required to write and submit a brief trip report to the Code4Lib 2014 Scholarships Committee by April 1, 2014 to be posted to the Code4Lib wiki. The report should address: (a) what kind of experience they had at the conference, (b) what they have learned, (c) what suggestions they have for future attendees and conference organizers.

All reimbursement forms and receipts must be received by May 26, 2014.

The Information Research Work Group (IWRG) at the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin has two fully funded PhD positions, starting in August 2014, available for incoming doctoral students [1].
 

The Information Research Work Group (IWRG) at the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin has two fully funded PhD positions, starting in August 2014, available for incoming doctoral students [1].
 
Background on IWRG. Faculty and students in the IWRG at the School of Information at UT Austin undertake empirical and analytical studies of information workers in their workplaces, exploring how work and occupations are changing.  We draw primarily on ethnography, participant observation, interviews, historical analysis, and archival analysis to explore occupations such as records managers, remote financial professions, digital humanists, open source software developers, and online community managers.
 
Funding. Both positions provide full tuition, a stipend of $20,000, and research travel support for two years. As Ph.D. students in the School of Information, students would be eligible for continued funding through in-coming grants as well as teaching assistantship and instructor positions; successful students should expect full-time support through the completion of their Ph.D.
 
Austin as a Home Base. Home to SXSW Interactive, a rich live music scene, and a rapidly growing technology sector, Austin is an energetic, young city that is a great place to live and work through a Ph.D., offering excellent employment and education opportunities for spouses and families.
 
Details on Applying. We welcome inquiries from students interested in pursuing academic careers, coming from diverse academic and social backgrounds. Applicants with professional work experience are particularly encouraged to apply, as are students currently completing their masters or undergraduate degrees. ACRL announces e-Learning scholarships to help librarians, library staff and library school students stretch their professional development dollars. Twelve e-Learning scholarships will be awarded – seven covering the registration cost of a Webcast and five covering the cost of an online course.  Complete details and application materials are available online.

ARL is now accepting applications for the ARL Career Enhancement Program for 2014. Masters of library and information science (MLIS) students from racial and ethnic minority groups, who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours (or will complete 12 hours by the scheduled internship) in an American Library Association (ALA)–accredited program, are encouraged to apply for this enriching experience.

ELIGIBILITY

Anyone who has taught a course at an ALA-accredited master’s program since September 3, 2010, as full-time faculty or as an adjunct, is eligible.

Current students or recent graduates and faculty members are encouraged to nominate candidates. Students must have taken a class from the nominee within the past two years.

 

What to submit

Candidates will be evaluated primarily on the basis of the nominating letter (no more than two pages in length or email equivalent), but nominators are welcome to submit also letters of support and supplementary material (examples of coursework, etc.) for the judges to consider.

Discussion Academic Librarians of Color

Are you a librarian of color? Do you work in an academic library in the United States? If so, please add your voice by filling out a questionnaire for a study on the self-perceptions of professional and racial identity of academic librarians of color.

Despite an abundance of existing literature on diversity in libraries, as well as recruitment and retention initiatives of underrepresented populations in libraries, there has been little research on how academic librarians of color perceive themselves as professionals and as people of color. Our research will serve as the basis for a book chapter tentatively titled “Librarians of Color: Perceptions of Professional and Racial Identity in Academic Libraries” in the forthcoming ACRL publication Beyond the Bun: Librarian Valuing through Perception and Presentation (working title).

For this research, we want to define the term “person of color” beyond the literal color of one's skin. We are defining the term as individuals who reside in the United States who belong to minoritized racial and ethnic groups, including but not limited to: African American or African, Arab, Asian and Pacific Islander, Latino, Native American and Alaskan Native, and Multiracial.

We are seeking participants who are librarians working in an academic library setting in the United States, over the age of 18 years, who identify as persons of color.

Questionnaires will be collected online through the survey tool Qualtrics. Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in the online research environment. To protect the confidentiality of survey respondents the collection of IP addresses will be disabled in the survey results. Participation is voluntary and participants are free to withdraw at any time, or may choose to only answer specific questions. The questionnaire consists of several open-ended questions and will take about 20-30 minutes to complete.
