Action items:

  • Adam will ask Susan for names of Representatives from the Divisions.
  • Decision was to accept the Board’s changes to the Mission Statement for now and make any adjustments at Annual.
  • Simon has a copy of the checklist review of accessibility services at the conference and will send it to Adam.
  • ·         Adina offered to send out a link to a guide to accessible event planning her school created.
  • Adam will send out a survey for the time of the meeting in time to get it in the program

Housekeeping

Adam will ask Susan for names of Representatives from the Divisions.  Marty may ask to be the Rep from PLA if one is needed.

Old Business

Mission Statement. Adam read the mission statement.  The Board suggested taking out the specific types of disabilities because we might omit some, and another ALA policy, Library Services to People with Disabilities, explains that. 

There was concern that omitting specific types of disabilities would be too vague.  However, the list that had been included did leave out some disabilities, including intellectual disabilities.

The former mission statement was very old, and only a sentence or two long.  The original mission of Accessibility Assembly was accessibility of the conferences.

There was discussion about whether this group could change the Library Services to People with Disabilities policy if the language becomes outdated. 

It was stated that Accessibility Assembly should reflect ALA’s policy.

Decision was to accept the Board’s changes for now and make any adjustments at Annual.

Library of Congress NLS app for Apple and Android.

In September you can use an iPad or iPhone to download audiobooks and magazines.  300 units were downloaded in the first month. 

Itunes store has a Bard mobile app.  Voiceover can be used. 

There is a wishlist. 

There are Braille books and magazines and there are setting for people with low vision.  The app is a lot easier to use and you don’t have to buy a separate device.  There is a refreshable display that works with iPad.  Children like it as they already like games on the iPad.  Now NLS is reaching out to members who had said no thanks before.  Android app is coming out.

Continuing Business

 

Checklist review of accessibility services at the conference.  Simon has a copy and will send it to Adam.

ALA website accessibility

Adam read an email from Mike Marlin.  OnPeak’s web presence was improved. 

Adina said it’s unclear whether the chat interface in ALA Connect is screen reader accessible.  It would be helpful to know about this for the purpose of scheduling virtual meetings that are as accessible.

Accessibility of Conference Center and Exhibit floor.

Discussion of how to find people on the exhibits.  Simon mentioned RFID tags for exhibits.

Carrie said getting accessible rooms reserved through the reservation system was problematic.

Carly said that at a presentation at Annual 2013, a wheelchair user in a group of presenters was excluded because the lift to the stage didn’t work.  The young presenter then did not participate.  This is a common problem and the easiest fix is to not use a platform.

Social events scheduled as part of the conference are held at inaccessible locations.  Discussion about this.  They could at least put information on the event description about accessibility.

Adina offered to send out a link to a guide to accessible event planning her school created.

A list of accessible venues for a city could help.

Yelp sometimes has information about accessibility.

A report card to go back to ASCLA Board and to Council was suggested.

Height of carpet and wires on the Exhibit floor are considerations.

Annual meeting time and date.

Because the Annual Meeting has most members busy throughout the week, holding the Accessibility Assembly meeting at ASCLA's All Committee meeting slot has been popular.  We will do so again this year.

The ASCLA All Committee meeting will take place in Vegas on Sunday, June 29, 04:30 pm 05:30 pm, Caesar’s Palace -Neopolitan IV Room.

ASCLA will place signs on all the tables to indicate which committee is which.

Discussion 2013 Mid Winter Meeting

Good Afternoon,

I am still finalizing the agenda but I wanted to share one piece of information on the meeting. 

The Association of Research Libraries recently published a report from its Task Force on Services to Patrons with Print Disabilities.  Judy Ruttenberg is a Program Director at the Association of Research Libraries and served as the ARL staff liaison on the task force.  Judy will be present at the meeting to give an overview of the report and answer any questions.
