The guide currently includes the following topic pages: Issues Overview, Author's Rights, Open Access, Libraries & Scholarly Communication, and Selected Works from Panel Speakers.

Additional content will soon be added to the bibliography. So, check back periodically for new content. Thanks to the members of the LPSS Library Instruction Committee for their hard work on the bibliography and their participation throughout the past year. The committee members are:

Online Doc ALA Annual Minutes from the LPSS Professional Development Committee (Virtual)

Meeting Minutes

What worked? What didn’t? Should we do something like this again?

Below are the minutes from the virtual meeting of the Professional Development Committee:

Professional Development Committee
2015 ALA Annual Meeting
Virtual meeting, via WebEx Conferencing
Friday, June 19th, 1:00 – 2:00 pm EST
Meeting Minutes

Present: Brian Kooy, David Schwieder, Jodi Grebinoski, Lynn Thitchener (Chair)

I.                    e-Forum debrief:

What worked? What didn’t? Should we do something like this again?

Facilitating a asynchronous conversation is difficult, but our guest moderators, Catherine Morse, Lisa DeLuca, and Sarah Elichko, did a great job. The discussion was good, but participation was low. Many who registered left their settings to digest or summary mode (either by default, or by choice).

Would a webinar/panel discussion work better? There are technological hurdles. All of us have attended Webinars that failed for a variety of technological reasons. The group assembled felt that it might still be worth a try, even knowing the pitfalls. A dry run would be a must.  We might also consider collaborating with another section on hosting a webinar.

We will have more discussion about this when the new committee convenes.

II.                  Summary of e-Forum discussion?

Lynn compiled the discussion threads, removed personal names, etc. Jodi volunteered to write a short summary for the Fall issue of LPSS News, describing the experience of trying to host the discussion (the successes and challenges) along with a short summary of the discussion overall, linking to the full record of the discussion on the LPSS web page or as a document in ALA Connect.

III.                Professional Development Resources Page

David pointed out that while discussions and webinars may be good, one must invest a chunk of time watching/listening to extract what ends up being most useful.  A fixed resource is in many ways more accessible, as users can quickly scan for the needed information. A Professional Development Resources Page would provide this.

The page might include a list of related professional organizations, teaching resources, workshops and classes (both online and on-site wherever offered), e-lists and how to search the LPSS e-list.

If we host webinars or discussions, these could also be posted to the page.

IV.                Goodbye and thank-you to the members who are rotating off the committee.

The committee wishes to thank Linda Colding for her service to the committee from 2013 – 2015. Brian Kooy, David Schwieder, Jodi Grebinoski, Earl R. Shumaker, and Mr. Mohamed Berray will be serving again next year. Lynn Thitchener will be serving as co-Chair along with Kelly Janousek.
