AASL Best Websites for Teaching and Learning Committee Committee
Quick annoucement that I am going to go ahead and post here on ALA Connect for everyone.
The AASL Best Websites Committee will meet at Midwinter in Dallas from 3:45-5:30. (I doubt it will take the entire time, but that is the planned time) The meeting will take place in the Dallas Convention Center, Room A3 during the AASL All Committee Meeting time. I am serving on a panel from 1:30-3:30 so I am not able to have it at the beginning of the All Committee Time.
We will start at one of the tables, I will put a sign up for us, so I can't say exactly where we will be located in the room. Look for a sign that read Best Websites Committee. Many of us have met so you know what I look like. If you are not able to make it to the meeting, as always there will be minutes and I will post those shortly after. There will also be a Midwinter report submitted to ALA. If you would like to join us on Skype during that time, remember that Dallas is Central Standard Time, so we will all have to plan accordingly.
We will be discussing ALA Annual, steps for final eliminations, plans for the Spring, and whether anyone has any final additions for the list.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Heather Moorefield-Lang (Committee Chair)
Meeting started at 8:03 on Monday, August 15, 2011: Meeting took place on Skype
Meeting Attendees: Heather Moorefield-Lang, Cathy Nelson, Floyd Pentlin, Jessica, Hinman, John Schumacher, Susan Hess, Melissa Jacobs Israel, Kyle Harmon
Introductions: The meeting began with introductions of everyone present. Members have posted bios on the committee wiki and some have posted pictures. If you were unable to attend the meeting please go to the AASL Bestlist wiki take a look at Member Bios. Please add your own so others can find out more about you. Floyd had the wonderful idea to add pictures so we know what others look like.
Best Websites Site: We then went through the Best Websites site. Discussing the layout of the site, past award winners, landmark winners, our resources page, and how nominations can be made from this page. Everything from our past presentations as well as bookmarks is on the tools and resources page and this is available for members, librarians, and teachers to use for presentations. We encourage everyone to use our material just to give credit to the AASL Best Websites Committee when using the list. We also have Press Kit on the webpage for publications and articles on the Top Websites so if you write anything about the websites let me know and we can link it to the Press Kit page.
Wiki: We then moved on to the committee wiki. If you are not a member of the wiki, you will want to sign up with wikispaces and then request to be a member of our wiki. It has now been made private so that no one can read it but us. During the meeting we went through committee tasks and website criteria. There is a page for 2012 nominations, some sites are already listed from e-mail, ALA, and nominations, as well as other blog references and conferences. Those have been listed already. Our present categories are listed at the top of page. They may change (Discussion for next meeting).
We have another page for Gaining Nominations. This page has a pre-made announcement that you can cut and paste into your favorite listserv, twitter feed, or webpage to get website nominations. It is ready to go. But if you use it list on the wiki page where you have used it so that I can keep track. Good information for the annual report.
Let me know as well if you are doing any conferences about the Best websites on our Conferences and Presentations 2011-12 page. I announce those on the AASL and ALA Facebook pages.
Questions: There was some concern about the wiki. At the time it was open to guest edits but now it has been made private. There was also a question about parameters on presentations. And as long as AASL Best Websites Committee is given credit then it everything is usually good to go. We can use the pre-made presentations. Some of us make our own presentations. It depends on the situation.
Earlier there was a question about using the AASL Best Websites Logo: It is used for presentations for Best Websites presentations. Sometimes for blogs and such discussing the Best Websites. It shouldn't be altered. After that we have to ask AASL how it can be used. When in doubt ask me and I can check with our liaison Jennifer.
One thing I did not mention in the meeting: Starting this year we will be doing a blog entry twice a month for the AASL Blog on how the Best Websites can be used in practical ways in the teaching and learning. The first one came out last week on Twitter written by Melissa Jacobs Israel and myself. I will co-write them with each committee member. So I will approach each of you at least twice this year to write them with me. If the time is not good, I will come back around for you. But it doesn't take long. They blog entries are short and don't take long to write. The next one is on Scratch and Mary Fran Daley is working on that one with me.
Meeting adjourned at 9:00
