Welcome to the 2013-2014 History Section Instruction and Research Services Committee.

We had a great turnout at our two ALA Annual Programs.  This year, the Committee won’t be planning a program, but we will be working on at least three projects:

-- Disseminate the new Information Literacy Guidelines

The Guidelines are posted and ready to share within ALA and with other library and history organizations:  http://www.ala.org/rusa/resources/guidelines/infoliteracy.

At Annual, some of you indicated we should send this information to specific groups. Please send me the group name and contacts if you have them.

-- Review and update "Using Primary Sources on the Web":  www.ala.org/rusa/sections/history/resources/pubs/usingprimarysources)

The latest update was in January 2008. This has been a very useful and popular online tool, cited in a number of places, with numerous other websites linking to it. Olga Perkovic (McMaster) and Eileen Bentsen (Baylor) are leading this initiative.  They are looking for up to six volunteers to work on this project with them.

-- Develop an annotated directory of freely available online primary sources
Springshare is providing the RUSA History Section with a free LibGuides account to host this directory.  Theresa Mudrock (UWashington) and Chella Vaidyanathan (JHU) are leading this initiative. They are looking for two or three volunteers to work on this project with them.

Please email me if you are interested in working on any of these initiatives.  If you're interested in working on more than one, please rank them by preference.  I will compile your responses on a Google Form that others can add to.

If you have a project in mind for the Committee to work on, let me know.  Michelle and I would like for all members to be active in creating new RUSA History resources and disseminating the resources that already exist.

We're off to a great start!

Committee discussed plans for the Instruction and Research Services Committee Program for the 2013 Annual Meeting in Chicago.  An overview of the timetable for program planning was discussed. A recap of the email discussion from fall 2011 was presented. Ideas varied from doing reference on local people places and events, genealogy at the academic reference desk and an idea of digital history and humanities. A consensus was reached to submit a proposal for the program on the subject of Digital History.

A working program title of “Digital History: New Methodologies Facilitated by New Technologies” was agreed upon.  Various digital history projects around the country were discussed.  The committee decided to have a three person panel program with individuals representing a teaching faculty member, a librarian and a vendor or producer of digital history.

Possible speakers from the Chicago area will be researched. Members will continue to discuss the program through email in preparation for a program proposal due to be submitted on May 1.

SUMMARY OF MEETING(S): Despite a low turnout, we had a successful meeting. The first third of our meeting was devoted to updates/discussion concerning the future of the committee.  An ad hoc group of previous members will continue to work on the Information Literacy Standards.  A draft will be presented to RUSA Standards and Guidelines in November. Efforts to collaborate with the AHA are being pursued. We talked about possible topics for the HS program in 2013—most focused on local history topics.  This effort will be continued by the incoming chair, Nancy Bunker. The rest of the meeting was spent on revising the current draft of the standards.

RECOMMENDATIONS = This meeting was at a terrible time. Not only did it conflict with the RUSA Awards Program, but it was so late in the afternoon that we were tired.  I am wondering if the History Section has ever thought about having an All Committee Meeting?  This might help to solve scheduling problems and make it easier to collaborate/consult with other committees.
