Event Don’t Go Missing on the Shelf: Getting the Support you Need to be a Success

This panel consists of four speakers who will discuss their unique experiences, offer useful tips to attendees and engage participants in a lively question and answer period at the end of the session. An archives intern at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian will talk about her personal experiences with academic mentors in undergraduate and graduate school, emphasizing what experts from different fields can offer a young professional.

This panel consists of four speakers who will discuss their unique experiences, offer useful tips to attendees and engage participants in a lively question and answer period at the end of the session. An archives intern at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian will talk about her personal experiences with academic mentors in undergraduate and graduate school, emphasizing what experts from different fields can offer a young professional. An Assistant Medical Librarian at Kaiser Permanente, will discuss her experiences being involved with both formal mentoring program and seeking informal mentorships and how those mentorships have helped her navigate the library profession. A Regional Librarian at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, will provide useful tips to those who haven't been fortunate enough to locate and cultivate a mentoring relationship in their career and discuss alternative ways to find support from within your organization. A Reference & Instruction Librarian at Haas Arts Library, Yale University, will present an analysis of current library mentorship and what academic literature says about mentorship approaches and their effectiveness for library students and professionals. Event Defining Diversity Through Dialogue

This session will explore the interconnectedness of our identities, the unique ways that we define ourselves, and our values, beliefs and biases. We will use exercises to help us learn about who we are and how we impact others, and similarly, who others are and how they impact us. Come prepared to participate in this highly interactive session. Note this Spectrum Institute event is open only to current Spectrum Scholars and invited guests.

To date, the American Library Association has awarded over 600 Spectrum Scholarships! Spectrum Scholars have been in attendance at over 50 library schools.  They reside, study and work all across North America in a wide array of library positions in every type of library, ranging from the manager of special projects, rare books and special collections for the Princeton University Library to a librarian in a Bureau of Indian Affairs school on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico.
