Website update

New website has been created. Currently in the process of getting it linked from ACRL site. Unveiling at Annual.

Discussion:

Looks great! Nice layout, easier to navigate than other site. Kudos to Jen.

Is it possible to open anything that links to a different server (e.g. committee rosters, etc) in a new tab? What is web best-practice?

How to promote? Social media announcements. Fall newsletter announcement possibly from the committee or webmaster? Listserv announcement that could possibly be expanded for an LPSS News announcement.

How to update/refresh home page? What is the process?

Action Items:

  • announce the website on social media and at General Membership meeting
  • draft announcement for listserv and LPSS News
  • Start email discussion about opening links in new tabs
  • Start email discussion about updating/refreshing home page

Social Media update

145 FB members, only up a bit, 85 Twitter followers. Survey responses indicate that most everyone participating has heard of newsletter and listserv, but not as many about social media.

Where people want to see what: Listserv is the big winner. Comments were interesting, product reviews and comparisons are helpful and were requested a few times. Generally no more platforms than we already use and appreciation of non-duplication, tailoring info to the particular venue it's meant for, questions about integrating news onto the new website. Questions about how platforms relate to membership. Ideas about membership tools. Encourage to send announcements to Social Media Coordinator for anything. Want to make sure that we communicate what we're doing as a result of the data-- also what we are asking from other committees in LPSS as a result. Keep in mind that we only had small number of respondents, etc. Only announced via current communication channels.

Online presence document has been updated in draft form. Currently in hands of Executive with the following questions:

  • Can all of the items (new and archived) that this document says should be on the “website” be on our WordPress? Will some things need to remain housed at the ALA site? This includes section governing documents, newsletters, reviews or other publications, committee rosters and charges, conference presentation materials…
  • The listserv is not mentioned in this document, with the exception of one line (at the end, suggesting use of listserv for professional discussions). Should it be covered more fully?
  • Finally, who needs to be able to give input on what I’ve included in the document? Who needs to be able to view the final version?
  • Other things I have not considered?

Discussion:

  • How to make sure new leaders and committee members have seen this document and can update it? Would the manual be appropriate place for this document or for a list of documents that incoming chairs might want to consider, etc, that are flexible and editable-- it's a living document.
  • Would it be helpful for incoming people to understand what other committees are effected by the document? Who should I talk to about where these items go, etc? Would it be helpful to use to clue the next people into that? What about the Review and Planning Committee? How would that committee be tied in? Should it go there?

Action Items:

  • Write up a summary report on survey and send link to survey analysis to Executive. Then share with membership via listserv, social media, and LPSS News. Maybe tie this into the new website update -- we did not ask about the website at all in the survey, so does that make sense?
  • Send more questions to Executive about how to communicate the Online Presence Document, who has ownership, etc.

Newsletter Update

The past issue didn't have lots of early material, but submissions came in during the last week-- the newsletter was really long -- 16 pages. Don't see the newsletter as ALA and ACRL news venues, we're trying to focus on our section, including content regarding member news, our committees, vendor reviews, etc. Would ACRL be open to doing anything diff in the future as far as how often it is published? We've been doing PDF, could it change to WordPress? It could be a content page and then links to pieces that make up the newsletter. How do people feel about that? I don't know that we're ready to do it as a blog (there was a comment on the survey about that).

Discussion

Regarding the comment about the blog format, it could be a difference between understanding physical format and meaningful structure of a blog-- doesn't need to change to blog-like content. How to capture some info expected like ALA and ACRL News in a different venue? Might be worth it to explore using WordPress for the Newsletter. Most other sections are still using PDF, but some have moved to a more dynamic format. Maybe touch base with Jen and ask about how it would work again now the site is up. Comment on survey was about using a mobile device, just thinking about how things (long pdfs) might work on that kind of platform.

Action Items

  • Ask Jen about what a WordPress formatted newsletter would entail now that the site is up

Committee Charge Update

Executive will be reviewing and discussing the draft charge (with recommended changes RE frequency of LPSS News) at the their meeting for approval.

Goals & Priorities 2014-2015 Review

We've accomplished it all the goals! (The goal of exploring new social media platforms was done but membership doesn't want it.)

Discussion

Potential goals for 2015-2016:

  • Cross-promote newsletter and website info with social media accounts (FB and Twitter)
  • Engage more with other committees that could support social media or social media could support what they do. Integrate social media efforts with other committees where they find it useful.

Other Items

Informal meeting at ALA Annual for those who can make it. Meet at 9am in the designated meeting room (Saturday, June 27th Hilton Union Square -- Union Square Rooms 3 & 4) and then head for coffee.

Online Doc Draft Revised Committee Charge

by Emily Ford on Wed, May 20, 2015 at 11:33 am

We'd like to revisit our committee charge in order to capture the work we are doing with social media. I've taken a stab at it here, but hoped you could edit at your will.

Executive Committee would like to discuss this at their meeting at Annual, and any approval of the charge will come from that group. Please, if you could make any comments to this draft charge by Friday, May 29th, we can then have something to submit to Exec. for their review at Annual
