EBSS Instruction for Educators Virtual Planning Meeting Minutes

September 28, 2017

11:00am EST

Attendees: Dan Zuberbier (co-chair), Diane Fulkerson (co-chair), Yvonne Roux, Kim Frail, Ernesto Hernandez, Kate Lucey, Genevieve Innes, Sarah Gilchrist

  1. Welcome and Introductions
    1. Meeting was called to order at 11:00 am EST with introductions of committee members.
  2. Review Committee Charge
    1. Dan reviewed the committee charge. Members did not have questions.
  3. Old Business
    1. Last year’s committee submitted lesson plans from library instruction sessions with education courses. The committee discussed final steps for the project.
    2. Committee agreed the best option would be to add the lesson plans to the ACRL Framework Sandbox. It will add to the available lesson plans for the education discipline. The goal is to place the work in the Sandbox by December/January, and promote the Sandbox by sharing links to the lesson plans via the EBSS listserv.
  4. New Business
    1. Project for this year’s committee is to revise the Information Literacy Standards for Teacher Education to align with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Diane briefly reviewed the formal process to revise disciplinary standards, and informed the committee that Amanda Nichols Hess, member of the Information Literacy Frameworks and Standards (ILFSC) Committee will be our liaison from ILFSC to our committee. As we work through the process Amanda will be able to answer any questions or problems we encounter. Committee members noted that comparing the Standards to the Framework is not always a straight comparison, but the overall objective is to provide education librarians and teacher preparation programs with a similar type document as the current standards. Other documents available from the ILFSC libguide that could prove useful:
      1.                                                                i.      Checklist for Developing and Reviewing Framework Companion Documents
      2.                                                              ii.      Tips for Developing Framework Companion Documents
    2. Committee members will review the standards of other education organizations.
      1.                                                                i.      Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)
      2.                                                              ii.      International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)
      3.                                                            iii.      American Association of School Librarians (AASL)
      4.                                                            iv.      Association for Educational & Communications Technology (AECT)
      5.                                                              v.      Committee members will sign up for one set of standards
    3. Committee members will use the Threshold Concepts for Teacher Education Bibliography to identify relevant articles about teacher education and threshold concepts.
    4. Review Outcomes
      1.                                                                i.      Dan and Diane shared that they expect the process will be lengthy, and, at the earliest, the revised standards would be ready to submit to the ACRL Board of Directors in June 2019.
      2.                                                              ii.      Each committee member will select 2-3 articles from the Threshold Concepts for Teacher Education Bibliography in addition to reviewing the standards of other education organization.
      3.                                                            iii.      We will use the sign-up sheet as the document to create an annotated bibliography of the articles and education organizations. In the spring, we will likely conduct a literature review, but will discuss in more detail at our next meeting.
  5. Wrap Up/Adjournment
    1. Dan will send out a Doodle poll to determine a date for our next meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 12:00pm EST.

1. Greetings
- Samantha shared that next year, the committee will need to work on revising the Information Literacy Standards for Teacher Education in light of the Framework

2. Committee member progress updates re: Lesson Plan Project

Google doc link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Nfj3NevpxI-u_LIuLXrv5TqAe-E-iLd1dQOPnadpZN0

- Amy shared that she would have felt more comfortable with a template for what to do

- Committee members had not agreed on an exact end product for the project, so a template wasn’t possible.

- Member contributions to the shared document are mixed. Some members revised a lesson plan, others commented on experience

3. Discussion of format/venue for sharing our work, next steps

-       Possible options for publication were shared:

-       Fall EBSS newsletter

-       C&RL News article or The Way I See It article

-       Dan suggested The Way I See It article on broader ideas from the experience, sharing experience with re-mixing lesson plans, connecting this to the way it’s done among K-12 educators.

-       Lesley shared that MERLOT is a potential option for sharing our lesson plans – option to create bookmark collections with a unique URL that can be shared; Lesley also noted different academic communities within MERLOT; features of MERLOT include both a controlled vocabulary and options for tags

-       Lesley suggested a think-aloud process article

-       Dan agreed to be point person for project either informally or as incoming co-chair

4. Decided on the following as next steps:

- Samantha will follow up with current committee to encourage any individuals who want to post a lesson plan or resource that came out of their individual work to do so by June 30

- Any current committee members who are rotating off the committee and are interested in potential involvement in an article/write-up should let Samantha or Dan know

- Dan and Diane Fulkerson, as next year’s co-chairs, will discuss the write-up/article with the new committee, and decide how to proceed

Guests present: Lesley Farmer

Minutes

1. Introductions/Welcome

2. Set priorities for committee work this year

Idea from June 2016 meeting re: developing/gathering resources related to Framework was discussed

 Discussion of context:

  • Samantha shared re: her meeting with other chairs of EBSS Education committees, no concern in that meeting about overlap with our committee, enthusiasm from other chairs about our idea to develop and/or identify resources related to using the Framework for educators.
  • In June, the committee discussed the possibility of creating a libguide. EBSS is launching an EBSS-specific libguide as an option.
  • Diane is also on the ACRL Student Learning and Information Literacy Committee and will be helping to test the new ACRL Framework sandbox in the coming weeks. She is happy to share screenshots of the sandbox with our committee to give us a sense of what it will be like. It is a work in progress, hopefully will be up and ready to use by December or January.
  • Samantha shared that the ACRL Standards will be removed from the ACRL website on July 1, 2017. Diane stated that it is her understanding that disciplinary standards such as the Teacher Education standards will remain in place longer in order to allow those sections to transition to the Framework. ANSS and WGSS are working on this this year. Diane and Lesley confirmed that there is no intention from the ACRL Board to bring the Standards back.
  • Samantha will contact Standards and Frameworks committee chair re: our timeline

Discussion of exactly what to do:

  • Concerns were raised about the static nature of libguides.
  • Kim suggested possible group project of conducting case studies at our institutions; Jenny suggested developing lesson plans
  • Dan voiced concerns about what we do not being used – necessity for marketing
  • Discussion of making connections between education or accreditation standards and the Framework, which standards would we focus on? CAEP, Standards for the 21st Century Learner, P21 Framework, Common Core, Future Ready Framework, ISTE Standards
  • It was decided that we do not want to write an education version of the Framework, instead use Framework as is.
  • Decided to work on lesson plans, which we will post to an existing platform.
  • In spring, committee will decide on a platform for sharing lesson plans (MERLOT, CORA, Framework sandbox) and post them there, market them via EBSS listserv and newsletter

 3. Next Steps

  • Samantha will create shared Google doc for brainstorming ideas for lesson plans using a couple of different organizations (by frame, by student level, by content area)
  • Committee will use that brainstorming to help decide a plan for lesson plan development (e.g., what primary organization, how many)
  • Group will write down lesson plan ideas on the shared doc over the next month.
  • Gather lesson plan templates: Diane will share hers, Samantha will share hers, Samantha will find MERLOT template and share with group

Approval of notes from prior meeting: Minutes from the January 2016 Meeting were approved virtually over email.

1. Introductions/Welcome

2.  Update on current projects (esp. the survey on and request for ideas related to the Framework)

Samantha reminded the committee that our project to revise the ACRL IL Standards for Educators has been delayed to allow everybody time to reflect on what the addition of the ACRL IL Framework means to this process. Our committee used the time to survey EBSS list to gather information about how the standards are used. We had a very low response rate.

We shared the results of our survey to the EBSS listserv on March 3, and requested ideas related to Research as Inquiry. Samantha received only one response to this request.

3.  Suggestions for projects for next year's committee

Discussion of working on 1) a compilation of resources related to working with the Standards, the Framework, and threshold concepts, and/or 2) a revision of the IL Standards for Teacher Education. General support of the idea to develop a resource list. General agreement that a revision of the Standards would be more helpful. Discussed possibility of revising the Teacher Education Standards, too, if there is interest and time available. Some questions about how well the Standards are used. Perhaps more promotion is needed? Data to be collected on usage?

Diane mentioned the upcoming WGSS discussion at ALA Annual about developing discipline-specific standards:

https://www.eventscribe.com/2016/ala- annual/fsPopup.asp?Mode=presInfo&PresentationID=142973

Monday, June 27, 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM, Hilton Orlando, Room Lake Virginia

2015-2016 Summary

Samantha Godbey, Committee Chair

Committee’s goals for year:

- Gather information on EBSS usage of Standards and Framework in preparation for possible revision of IL Standards for Teacher Education

Projects/tasks completed:

- Distributed survey via EBSS listserv re: usage of Standards and Framework

- Shared survey results with membership via EBSS listserv

- *Both contribute to ACRL Plan of Excellence Goals re: Student Learning (Advance innovative practices and environments that transform student learning) and New Roles and Changing Landscapes (Academic and research library workforce effectively navigates change in higher education environments), as we try to navigate the recent changes with the new Framework and seek to understand its impacts on our instruction.

Projects/tasks still pending

- None, but committee discussed options for next year. Members feel that curating a list of resources related to the Framework for librarians working with educators would be most useful for next year, more so than revising the IL Standards for Teacher Education.

Concerns/issues for the Executive Committee to consider

- One concern brought up in our meeting was how to effectively market the Standards themselves as well as any new resources we develop. Obviously, there is the listserv, but maybe this is something to discuss as a section – how can we best communicate about resources with one another?
