Discussion Convergence--Library, Archives, and Museum Identity in the Web Age?

by Karen Muller on Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 03:41 pm

Convergence--Library, Archives, and Museum Identity in the Web Age?

Convergence--Library, Archives, and Museum Identity in the Web Age?

Care to explore a different type of future? Traditional professional identities are being challenged. In the short term, an economic crisis threatens all cultural institutions. It is leading enterprising Libraries, Archives, and Museums (LAMs) to work together and seek cooperative ventures. In the long term, the Web may be forcing a basic redefinition of those fields. Nineteenth-century institutional distinctions blur in the unifying face of digital images and attitudes of a new generation of information-driven digital natives.

Join us in exploring this looming and perhaps inescapable landscape at “The LAMs Converge,” on Saturday, June 26, from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m in Room 209A/B of the Washington Convention Center. Help explore how LAMs can address a new era of collaboration. How are the relationships shifting? How can cultural heritage institutions create structures that move beyond their building walls for a very different type of user? Indeed, what is the economic future of libraries, archives and museums?

The program grew out of the 2009 "Convergence" conference of the Institute of Museum and Library Services and follows a similar session at the American Association of Museums in May. Your invitation comes from CALM, the unique inter-organizational committee with representatives from ALA, the Society of American Architects, and the American Association of Museums. The distinguished panel includes (L) Martín Gómez, City Librarian, Los Angeles Public Library; (A) Helen Tibbo, Professor, School of Information & Library Science, UNC; and (M) Michael Edson, Director, Web & New Media Strategy, Smithsonian Institution, OCIO; and, Fred Stielow, American Public University System and ALA's CALM co-chair.
