Discussion Report from RUSA's Leadership Development Task Force

by Joseph Thompson on Fri, Sep 12, 2014 at 03:28 pm

Hi all,

This is something I don’t believe we've yet formally discussed, so I’d like to put it on the agenda for our Sept. 18th Adobe Connect meeting.  Gary White is chairing the RUSA Leadership Development Task Force, which held two telephone meetings over May-June this year.  They have developed a set of recommendations about how to go forward, and the members have agreed to continue serving over this 2014-2015 year.

Attached are the notes from the June meeting, as well as the recommendations compiled by Gary.  Most immediately the TF is interested in organizing a discussion/speed mentoring event at ALA Midwinter 2015. They are looking for feedback from us.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

  6. ASCLA Leadership Institute: Do we want to send RUSA leaders to this at a RUSA-subsidized rate? - ALL
TITLE: Knowing You, Knowing Them: The Secret to   Successful Leadership
     When: Friday, January 24, 9:00am-4:00pm
DESCRIPTION: One of the biggest challenges of leading others is understanding what makes them   tick. This full-day workshop will help you understand both yourself in light of your leadership responsibilities, and those who work for you. Instead of offering a checklist or template of how-tos, presenter Linda Bruno, MBA,  will focus on the human element of leadership.   You will leave this session with insights into personalities, emotional intelligence, dealing with change and creating a motivating environment--secrets that can help you be a more  successful leader! Linda has presented several workshops for ASCLA, and receives rave reviews   for her content and presentations.
REGISTRATION RATES: ASCLA members, $279; ALA  members, $299; non-ALA members, $339;  Student/Retired members of ALA, $229.                                                                                   NEED TO KNOW ASAP: how much RUSA is willing to  subsidize—both dollar amount per person and  quantity of member participants so we can get the coupon code up right away. (SH)
  7. Gale Cengage Travel Awards: how to proceed? Gale has told conference services to proceed business as usual, but the situation could change by the time of the award presentation. The other awards have a caveat stating that the cash award is dependent on vendor funding at the time of the award; this is more of a problem for the travel to conference awards. (SH)
  8. Ambassador program action plan: next steps - ALL
  9. Dates for upcoming board meetings update - KERN
  10. Craft agenda for next RUSA board and Executive Committee meetings:

10a. Items for Executive Committee Agenda

Discussion OCLC Grant Application to IMLS: Strengthening Continuing Education for Libraries

by Joseph Thompson on Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 08:05 am

Hello RUSA Executive Committee members,

Hello RUSA Executive Committee members,

We've been asked by Sharon Streams of OCLC WebJunction if RUSA will write a letter of support for a grant application that they are submitting to IMLS.  The proposed project is "Strengthening Continuing Education for Libraries" and in-part got its start during a Continuing Education Summit that IMLS hosted in June.  I attended the Summit as the RUSA representative.  If funded, the project will help to prepare library staff to better provide online learning and create an infrastructure for coordinating the CE offerings available from many providers [this is my brief explanation of the proposal]. I encourage you to read Sharon's full draft of the project proposal at the bottom of this message.

Earlier this week Kathleen and I received a message from Sharon letting us know that IMLS had given OCLC the go-ahead to submit the grant proposal.  At this point we are not being asked to commit anything to the project itself - only the letter of support.  OCLC would like to consider RUSA as an interested party, to keep in touch as the project unfolds, and to be consulted  about whether the pilot program can be sustained or expanded beyond the end of the grant.  Sharon anticipates that PLA will be providing a letter of support as well.

They have been given a very short turnaround time by IMLS, so have requested that we provide a letter of support by this Friday (August 2) by 3:00 p.m. ET.  Kathleen and I have gone ahead and prepared a letter using language suggested by the grant applicants - signed, scanned, signed, scanned, and attached here.

Do any of you have concerns that you feel should prohibit us from endorsing the grant proposal?  Also, if you have recommendations on the proper protocol for this sort of request in the future, specifically when a quick turnaround is needed, please let us know that too.

In a moment I'll be creating a poll here in ALA Connect on this question.

Thanks so much!

-Joe
