The Divisions are still talking about the feasibility of moving forward together, and more discussions will be held at the ALA Annual Conference. We are currently working on member surveys for this spring and expect to have more methods for feedback such as online town halls and email discussions.

ALA Connect (and this public group) will be in a “gray out” period from March 26 - April 25 to allow for a migration to a new platform. While Connect is in view-only mode, please feel free to reach out directly to the Presidents of each Division. LITA has also created an anonymous form to collect comments and questions, and answers will be posted on the LITA Blog.

Discussion About ALCTS, LITA, and LLAMA

by Jenny Levine (staff) on Fri, Mar 23, 2018 at 02:55 pm

To help our members better understand each division, we've created two documents that describe each unit's governance, structure, and major programs. We hope this will help make connections between division programs and highlight starting points for future discussions.

Discussion our diversity is our strength

by Jennifer Bromley on Wed, Mar 21, 2018 at 12:01 pm

Thank you, ALCTS, LITA, and LLAMA, for starting this conversation. Every year I get my renewal for ALA, I struggle in deciding which Division(s) to choose for membership. I can only afford one, so I typically choose ALCTS. But I have very strong interests in LITA and LLAMA.

I keep coming to back to the "ALA - Organizational Effectiveness Discussion - MW18 final.pdf" document, and a statement made within "Finding Statement #9" which talks about how our diversity is our strength. However, new members (and continuing members, too) can easily get lost in the plethora of choices.

I think the key might be building on that strength of diversity.

In any university, the strongest departments, I believe, are those where there is cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Not sure how this could play out, but one idea I had was maybe we can find a few "themes" where LITA, ALCTS, and LLAMA can start collaborating and see what happens.

Discussion Membership Overlap Report

by Jenny Levine (staff) on Thu, Mar 22, 2018 at 09:36 am

The three divisions have been working on pulling together data as a foundation for discussions going forward. We'll be sharing these reports publicly in this community as we create them and encourage you to post your comments and questions about any of the content. There's also a Google Form for submitting questions if you'd rather remain anonymous.

Our first document is a 2017 Small Divisions Membership Overlap Report (Google Spreadsheet) that shows overlap numbers between ALCTS, LITA, and LLAMA, including at the section level. As you read through the data, please note that LITA doesn't have sections, and LLAMA migrated its sections to a communities of practice model during its recent reorganization.

File LLAMA-ALCTS-LITA-Realignment-Working-Document

by Jenny Levine (staff) on Thu, Feb 22, 2018 at 10:23 am

PDF File, 102.03 KB

A community for discussing the potential alignment of ALA's functional divisions (currently ALCTS, LLAMA, and LITA). Whether this would be a model for increased collaboration between the divisions or something bigger involving shared/joint membership and structural realignments, or even a full merger to a new single division, has not been decided.
