Research Services Librarian and Liaison for Science and Engineering

Seattle University's Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons invites applications for an experienced, flexible, and innovative library faculty member to serve in the position of Research Services Librarian and Liaison for Science and Engineering. This 12 month non-tenure track position, at a rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian, is available April 1, 2018.
A dedicated Research Services Librarian with assigned liaison responsibilities for the sciences and engineering is critical to the Library’s ability to support the College of Science and Engineering students, faculty and staff. Research Services and Library Faculty responsibilities round out the incumbent’s portfolio.
Liaison Responsibilities
- Serve as a liaison librarian to many of the departments or programs within the College of Science and Engineering with responsibilities to maintain subject expertise, develop collections, provide specialized research services and instruction, and create resource guides.
- Provide outreach, foster communication, and market library services.
- Educate and inform students and faculty on scholarly communication issues, such as open-access initiatives, digital publishing, and copyright.
Research services librarian responsibilities
- Provide research assistance to students, staff, faculty, and the wider community through services such as in-person, online, email and research consultations.
- As a generalist and subject liaison, build an ongoing understanding of the disciplines and relevant library resources to navigate all fields of study.
- Contribute to the development of a working reference collection and research tools, such as guides and tutorials, that best fits the research needs of students, faculty, and the greater Seattle University community.
- Apply and advocate a positive public service ethic that supports teaching, scholarship, and learning for the Seattle University community.
- Contribute and participate in the Learning Commons partnership.
Library Faculty Responsibilities
- Contribute to library wide initiatives by serving on library, campus, inter-institutional and consortial committees, participating in strategic planning initiatives, and cooperating closely with other library units.
- As a member of the Library Faculty, participate in the process to define and to exercise the rights and responsibilities associated with faculty governance consistent with the cultures of the university and the library.
- Engage in research, scholarly publication, professional development, and service activities in areas appropriate to academic librarianship and the disciplines served as outlined in the Committee for Librarian Evaluation and Promotion documents.
- Continuously assess and improve library operations and services through data collection and analysis.
- Carry out other duties as assigned that contribute to the achievement of the library’s strategic plan, the completion of special projects, the regular delivery of library services, or the development of new initiatives.
- Support the mission of Seattle University and its commitment to the vision and values of Jesuit and Catholic higher education.
Experience and Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: ALA-accredited graduate degree.
In addition, candidates must provide evidence of:
- Demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of science and engineering information resources and research methods in an academic, research, or special library setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current professional trends, especially those relating to research services, collection development, and instructional services.

- Experience in solving problems independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Desirable Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or advanced degree in the sciences or engineering.
- Experience providing reference, information literacy instruction, collection development, and/or outreach services.
- Knowledge of trends in scientific research and scientific data management.
- Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary and emerging information technologies.
- Experience managing projects in a library, academic, or information environment.
- Experience in research, scholarly publication, professional development and service activities in areas appropriate to academic librarianship and the disciplines served.
