The University Archives, a component of the Special Collections Department, a unit of Academic Library Services, is the official repository for the records of East Carolina University. The University Archives operates according to the management of all records created, received and maintained by the university, and ensures that the records determined to have enduring value are preserved and made available for research.

Job Duties |
Academic Library Services at East Carolina University invites applications for the position of University Archivist and Records Manager. The University Archives is part of the Special Collections Division within Joyner Library and is the repository for ECU official records as well as other materials that document the university’s history. In addition to its archival function, the department operates the university’s records center which houses records from various offices and departments in accordance with federal and state law and the University General Records Retention and Disposal Schedule. The University Archivist and Records Manager is a department head with supervisory responsibility for staff and student employees. The Archivist/Manager reports to the Assistant Director for Special Collections, is part of the Special Collections Division leadership team, and serves on the library Director’s Council.
Archivist functions for which this position is responsible include developing and executing procedures pertaining to archival collection development, arrangement, maintenance, and preservation for both physical and electronic materials; developing and maintaining campus partnerships that ensure the growth and use of University Archives for instruction and research; working with donors of alumni, faculty, and staff papers; developing physical and digital exhibits; and collaborating with campus partners on special projects relating to ECU’s history. The Archivist also provides regular reference service and instruction relating archival materials and serves in a regular rotation on the Special Collections service desk. Some weekends and evening hours will be required.
Records Manager functions for which this position is responsible include ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and university procedures governing physical and electronic records; managing the Records Center; liaising with off-campus records storage facilities; advising the university community on their records management responsibilities including application of the University General Records Retention and Disposal Schedule; and managing the disposition of records that have been transferred to the Records Center in accordance with the Schedule.

Minimum Education/Experience |
Master’s degree in library or information science (or international equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program or a master’s degree in public history, archival studies, history, or a closely related field; minimum of 3 years of experience in the application of current archival standards for appraisal, selection, acquisition, arrangement and description of archival records, records management experience; demonstrated knowledge and understanding of records management standards, including legal and fiscal issues governing university records; including electronic records; knowledge of and experience with the identification and management of confidential and other sensitive records; knowledge of electronic records management and digital preservation issues; public service experience; knowledge of database systems and applications; working knowledge of metadata and encoding standards; superior interpersonal and written communication skills; ability to work in a collaborative environment.
Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Second master’s degree in a related field; experience with the organizational structure of academic institutions; experience with Archivist’s Toolkit, Aeon, Versatile Professional, and/or ArchivesSpace; experience with electronic records management systems; understanding of North Carolina records retention laws and the University General Records Retention and Disposal Schedule; full-time staff supervisory experience; donor relations experience; certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists; certification by the Institute of Certified Records Managers; instruction experience; experience with public programs, exhibits and outreach.
