    Nature of Work

     


    This position has an emphasis on working in a branch manager capacity and participates in GRPL's Management Team and strategic plan functions.  In addition to the examples of work, applicants will need to demonstrate supervisory capacity, enjoy managing a small team in a branch setting, and possess exemplary customer service skills as well as knowledge and experience as a working librarian.  An interest in community engagement is essential.  An interest in and capacity for performing storytimes and engaging children and caregivers is preferred. The ability to communicate effectively both in Spanish and English is preferred.

    This position will be primarily located at the Madison Square Branch.

    Examples of Work:



    • Provides excellent public service; answers reference questions; provides readers' and media advisory; performs database searches; assists patrons with computers.

    • May direct other staff and give input to their work evaluations; may train personnel in use of a specialized collection; may contribute to planning and development of continuing education programs and community affairs programs; may prepare and present programming to varied ages, individually or as a part of a team.

    • Attends professional conferences, meetings, and trainings; keeps current with developments in library science.

    • Contributes to selection, development and evaluation of materials in specialized or assigned area; recommends items to be added or withdrawn from the library collections.

    • Leads library tours.

    • Performs other related duties as assigned.


     


    Minimum Training and Experience

     


    Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Eligible for certification from Library of Michigan.


     


    Other Necessary Qualifications

     



    • Knowledge of library principles, professional methods, practices and techniques.

    • Ability to plan and deliver programs.

    • Knowledge of library resources, services, policies and procedures.

    • Knowledge of the community and its characteristics; awareness of current trends in patron interests and needs.

    • Proficiency in the use of computers for library work; including the ability to access and utilize Internet resources and office software applications.

    • Ability to supervise a small staff.

    • Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively.

    • Ability to communicate with a diverse public in identifying and satisfying individual interests.

    • The employee must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time in the performance of the duties associated with this position. Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance is also required. The ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer is essential to this position.
