    Readers’ Advisory Librarian
    The Readers’ Advisory Librarian is responsible for creating content that supports trends in readers’ advisory. Our audiences are adult, teen, and younger readers, the parents of young readers, and the public librarians and school media specialists that support these readers. Job responsibilities may include creating editorial content for the following: NextReads newsletters, NoveList databases and associated channels, Book Squad newsletters, and recommendations.


    Primary Responsibilities:



    • Plan, create or coordinate, process, and deliver customized content for librarians and readers who use NoveList products via multiple channels.

    • Communicate with customers in order to deepen their engagement with NoveList products.

    • Monitor trade journals, blogs, and other relevant media in order to:

      • Identify trends in popular fiction and nonfiction

      • Identify potential books for recommendations work or NextReads content

      • Collaborate with editorial team to plan and create content based on key trends for editorial content or Book Squad emails.



    • If working with contributors, coordinate and supervise their work and, as appropriate, recruit new contributors. As defined by the needs of interest groups, defined trends, and/or the editorial calendar, work with contributors to develop informative, useful, and engaging content relevant to NoveList’s audience.

    • If working with contributors, edit submitted content (including recommendations) for accuracy and to meet defined standards of style, tone, and grammar.

    • Plan, create, monitor, and update lists created for readers based on established procedures.

    • Select titles to be used on the NoveList interface carousels per defined standards. Write recommendations for selected titles.

    • Select fiction and nonfiction books for NextReads newsletters based on data gathered and an understanding of how, why, and what people read for pleasure.

    • Write annotations or other content for fiction and nonfiction books, utilizing readers’ advisory practices.

    • Develop author, title, and series readalikes based on independent research, existing features in NoveList, information from reviews, and an understanding of readers’ advisory principles.

    • Create theme-based content in response to popular culture, seasonal events, and reader trends in order to present interesting groups of related books.

    • Copyedit and ensure the accuracy of created content.

    • Work on and collaborate with cross-departmental teams or on special projects as assigned.

    • Perform QA and QC as needed for the NoveList products.

    Skills 


    Requirements



    • Masters in Library Science or graduate degree with 3+ years of library or related experience.

    • Professional knowledge of readers’ advisory theory and practice.

    • Demonstrated writing and editing skills.


    Preferred Qualifications:



    • Demonstrated familiarity with popular fiction and nonfiction genres.

    • Demonstrated understanding of appeal factors in readers’ advisory as well as knowledge of genres and the ability to make connections between books.

    • Knowledge of the needs of public and or/school libraries.

    • Ability to produce a substantial volume of engaging, high-quality, highly visible work under multiple tight deadlines.

    • Ability to work as an effective team member, demonstrating strong collaborative skills to work towards a common goal.

    • Ability to exercise independent judgment within a team environment.

    • Searching skills across a variety of resources, especially NoveList, BIR, WorldCat, and library catalogs.
