    Stanford Medicine is seeking a motivated and resourceful metadata librarian (Librarian 1 or 2) responsible for capturing, creating, transforming, and integrating bibliographic and authority metadata using various systems to optimize resource discovery. Reporting to the Metadata Department Manager, the Metadata Transformation Librarian will be an integral part of helping to define and investigate the evolution of metadata, including long-term solutions for metadata interoperability and management. With an emphasis on data integration and relationships, Lane's Metadata department endeavors to go beyond traditional cataloging. Examples include: driving web interfaces with derived data and building records from extracted data sets.


     


    The Metadata Transformation Librarian will work closely with staff in Resource Management and other departments within the library to ensure optimal discovery of Lane Medical Library's resources by enriching metadata in Lane's catalog.


     


    We are seeking dynamic candidates with potential to enhance our efforts to provide creative solutions while maintaining a tradition of excellence. The position works closely with other staff to influence and achieve our collective goals in support of the School's research, clinical and educational mission.


     


    Duties include:


     


      *   Provides expertise in the development, implementation and assessment of metadata infrastructure policies and procedures


      *   Captures, creates and transforms bibliographic and authority metadata using various systems (i.e. Voyager (currently), MarcEdit, Voyager Global Change, and locally created software)


      *   Independently creates and maintains authority records, actively managing detection and resolution of problems in name, form/genre, and uniform title, etc.


      *   Supplies appropriate Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to bibliographic and authority records


      *   Works closely with Metadata team to analyze annual changes to MeSH to determine appropriate preprocessing, loading and postloading processing as needed.


      *   Investigates policy and procedural options and recommends changes. Communicates and actively builds relationships with Acquisitions, Collection Development, Archives/Special Collections and subject liaisons to ensure policies reflect needs of constituencies


      *   Investigates and recommends solutions to various metadata problems as part of introducing new systems and procedures


      *   Work with technology experts to configure, maintain, enhance, and develop discovery system


      *   Monitor developments in emerging standards and projects


      *   Serves as a liaison to a department (to be determined)


      *   May manage staff or student staff.

     DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


     


      *   Education and Experience, MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school of the equivalent with understanding of academic libraries, preferably medical libraries.


      *   Familiarity with MARC and current cataloging practices and standards


      *   Understanding of the application of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and other medical terminologies


      *   Knowledge of NLM's cataloging and indexing policies and familiarity with PubMed data


      *   Thorough understanding of bibliographic structures and relationships


      *   Excellent judgement and decision-making skills


      *   Understanding of context in complex systems relationships as it applies to data management


      *   Ability to deal with change, ambiguity and complex problems and to understand inter-system relationships


      *   Knowledge of data mapping and metadata transformation tasks


      *   Familiarity with cross-walking, normalizing and transforming metadata using XML


      *   Familiarity with XML, RDF, and other machine actionable languages; familiarity with, or ability to learn, linked data principles and standards


      *   Knowledge of regular expressions


      *   Familiarity with XSLT


      *   Foreign language skills (prefer) German, French or Latin
