    Salary Range: Anticipated hiring range of $66,000- 67,000 at the Senior Assistant level. 


    Position Description: The Robert E. Kennedy Library at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA, seeks an energetic, creative, collaborative, user-focused professional to join us in a new tenure-track faculty position as Outreach and Instruction Librarian. We are looking for someone with synergistic passions for advancing the mission of the library, engaging directly with students, and collaborating with a variety of partners to create dynamic and effective outreach programming.


    Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Academic Services, the Outreach and Instructional Librarian will develop strategies, partnerships and initiatives to enhance student knowledge of library research and information literacy skills in order to increase student success. This new position participates in the library-wide programming efforts, both instructional and co-curricular, to support the development of competencies and literacies that are the underpinning of a successful comprehensive polytechnic education. By participating in the library's program of instructional outreach and services delivered in both physical and online learning environments, this position supports the library's mission of promoting open and informed inquiry and fostering collaboration and innovation. By working closely with college librarians, Academic Services specialists, and the library's communications group and student graphic designers, this position collaborates in the development of online learning modules, tutorials, and outreach collateral to broaden the reach of library instruction beyond the physical classroom.


    Outreach activities for this position include, but are not limited to: responsibility for vision, implementation, and assessment of university-wide library outreach programs; coordinating university-wide library outreach efforts; promoting and stewarding a consistent outreach campaign across various media; acting as a liaison to other campus units and programs that support various student populations; coordinating and developing workshops and outreach events that support specialized library services and programs such as Open Educational Resources or Graduate Studies /Thesis Research Support.


    Instructional activities for this position include, but are not limited to: participating in Kennedy Library's robust instructional program by accepting teaching assignments, designing lessons, and teaching sessions; facilitating library workshops in the Foundational Experiences Program as a part of the team of librarians and peer learning assistants (LibRATs) led by the Foundational Experiences librarian; and participating both in person and via online chat in the provision of reference services to students, faculty, staff and the wider Cal Poly community.


    The professional growth and scholarly development activities of this tenure-track position include, but are not limited to, research and publication; presentations; and active participation in professional programs and organizations. Service expectations for this tenure-track position include, but are not limited to: serving on library committees; representing the library on University, CSU system and other professional committees.


    The successful candidate for this position will be creative and flexible, adept at working effectively both independently and collaboratively, and capable of building relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Passion for student success, organization skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate well across diverse audiences are essential. The successful candidate will also have a strong dedication to working with campus programs supporting underrepresented, first generation, transfer, military veteran and LGBTQ students.


    Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills



    • MLS from an ALA accredited program or comparable experience with relevant advanced degree; 

    • Three or more years of relevant experience; 

    • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, creativity, and the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a collegial, team-based environment; 

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills; 

    • Familiarity with issues and trends in outreach, information literacy, and working with faculty and students; 

    • Ability to articulate a genuine enthusiasm for advancing the library's mission to support student success. 


    Preferred Qualifications / Skills



    • Demonstrated experience in marketing and outreach; 

    • Demonstrated experience in coordinating services or programs; 

    • Demonstrated experience in assessing services or programs; 

    • Demonstrated experience in classroom instruction and teaching; 

    • Demonstrated experience in providing reference consultations services; 

    • Demonstrated experience and enthusiasm for working with diverse populations; 

    • Demonstrated experience in collection development; 

    • Demonstrated experience in working with various stakeholders to successfully forward initiatives; 

    • Demonstrated familiarity with Open Educational Resources.
