American University Library is seeking an innovative, energetic, and service-oriented librarian for a continuing appointment-track faculty position for the School of Education [SOE] and the School of Professional and Extended Studies [SPExS]. Rank will be dependent upon experience and stature in the field at either assistant or associate level.
Responsibilities: The Education and SPExS Librarian will be the point person for research assistance, information literacy instruction and collection development in support of the curriculum and the faculty research at the School of Education and SPExS, as well as education-related research across campus. The librarian will work closely with the faculty and administration of the School of Education and SPExS to ensure that the University Library is able to meet their research and pedagogical needs and to increase awareness of library resources. The Collection Development responsibilities include developing the Curriculum Materials Center [CMC], which includes the Larissa Gerstel Critical Literacy Collection. The CMC is housed in the same building as the School of Education. The Education and SPExS Librarian will coordinate closely with Access Services, which will manage the circulation and daily collection management activities of the CMC, and will coordinate with the School of Education, which uses the CMC as a learning space and classroom in conjunction with the collections. The Education and SPExS Librarian is responsible for all of the intellectual decisions concerning the collection and the pedagogical design of the space.
Identifies fund-raising opportunities for building collections supporting School of Education and SPExS and helps cultivate potential donors. Provides high-level subject specific research assistance to School of Education and SPExS faculty and students, as well as basic research assistance to all students and faculty. Teaches subject specific instruction sessions and participates in the baseline information literacy instruction for all students. Creates appropriate online tools to support the School of Education and SPExS students and faculty. Provides research and library support to all new SOE and SPExS programs and initiatives, including new online programs and post-doctoral researchers associated with the schools. Collaborates with colleagues, as appropriate, on scholarly communication in support of the School of Education and SPExS. Works with the School of Education to organize and implement the annual Larissa Gerstel Critical Literacy Symposium. Supports interdisciplinary initiatives across academic units that require expertise in education librarianship. Serves on the Library’s Collections Management Team and participates in decisions that affect the overall research materials collection. Assists all relevant entities in self-studies and reaccreditation, including CAEP.
In support of SPExS, this position supports the International Accelerator Program. This program is intended for international students, both undergraduate and graduate, who earn credits while improving their English language skills. This Education and SPExS Librarian will provide information literacy instruction and research support to these international students. Most of the classes taught in SPExS are interdisciplinary and work with subject collections that are built by other subject librarians. The Education and SPExS librarian will work with colleagues on the Collections Management Team to ensure that the collections meet the needs of SPExS students and faculty. Other areas of SPExS that this position supports include the Washington Semester program, the mentorship program, the AU Gap program, and online and in-person graduate professional programs, professional development programs. The Education and SPExS Librarian is a member of the Division of Research, Teaching and Learning [RTL] and reports to the Associate Director of RTL. As a member of RTL, the Education and SPExS Librarian also participates in broader initiatives as part of the University Library.
Library faculty members participate in library governance activities. The Education and SPExS Librarian also consults regularly with the School of Education and the SPExS teaching faculty and administrators. Library faculty members are expected to develop professionally, to contribute to the profession of librarianship, and to participate in campus-wide and library-wide activities.
Qualifications: ALA-accredited M.L.S. Demonstrated research assistance, instruction, and collection development experience. Awareness of current concerns and developments in education librarianship and service to international students. Evidence of potential for professional contributions and ongoing professional development. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. Strong public service ethic; collaborative skills. Ability to shift priorities in a rapidly changing environment. Ability to work across a broad-based constituency and to communicate a positive library image. Three years’ experience in an academic or research institution and a graduate degree in education, TESOL or a related field is highly preferred.
