Department Statement
|
|
The Student Center for Academic Achievement (SCAA) provides tutoring support for all fully matriculated California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) students, both undergraduate and post-baccalaureate. The SCAA also offers workshops and various online and in person services and resources to assist students with their writing assignments. The SCAA Writing Program is a collaborative effort between five writing support services offered at the SCAA - Writing Peer Tutoring, the Online Writing Lab, the Writing Associates (WA) program, and the Writing Skills Test (WST) preparation and support initiatives. Our team of 20+ Peer Tutors who work across several programs help us support nearly 1500 students and 4000 visits.

About the Position
|
|
Under the guidance of the SCAA Director, the Coordinator of the Writing Tutor Programs will have 2 programs under his/her/their jurisdiction: (1) Writing Peer Tutoring and (2) the Writing Associates (WA) program. Consequently, the Coordinator of the Writing Tutor Programs will plan, develop, and lead the coordination of both programs. This includes, but is not limited to, developing and facilitating training for all Writing Peer Tutors, WA, and tutoring for multilingual students programs according to standards set forth by the College Reading & Learning Association's (CRLA) International Tutor Training Certification Program (ITTCP) and the writing pedagogical needs of the tutors. The Coordinator will help research and develop best practices in working with the CSUEB student population which includes, but is not limited to, first-generation students, multilingual students, adult learners, etc. He/she/they will offer support for tutors under his/her/their jurisdiction through observations and feedback.
The Coordinator will implement "best practices" based on his/her/their knowledge of other campus writing centers and current trends in writing pedagogy while working closely with faculty, students, advisors across campus to identify the specific needs of the CSUEB community. The Coordinator will engage with campus faculty interested in writing instruction and oversee a complementary Writing Associates (WA) program. The Coordinator will join the University community in exploring local writing values across campus and collaboratively designing effective academic plans for the teaching of writing in a variety of disciplines. The Coordinator will make the SCAA¿s work in writing visible to the community, assess the effectiveness of its programs on an ongoing basis, and engage in strategic planning to make sure that SCAA's writing initiatives maximize student success.

Responsibilities
|
|
Coordinate Writing Peer Tutors Program * In collaboration with the SCAA Director and the Online Writing Lab (OWL) Coordinator, hire, train, and advise approximately 10 Peer Writing Tutors * Per the standards of the College Reading & Language Association (CRLA), develop tools and facilitate trainings to help Peer Writing Tutors provide effective instruction to tutees * Collaborate with the SCAA Director and STEM Tutor Coordinator to develop professional development, training, and curriculum development (workshops, handouts, etc.) for veteran tutors * Research and develop best practices in working with the CSUEB student population which includes, but is not limited to, first-generation students, multilingual students, adult learners, etc * Provide mentorship to Peer Writing Tutors through one-on-one guidance, regular feedback and observations, and office hours; Assist the peer writing tutors through sensitive and complex interactions between tutors and tutees * Create and disseminate training materials and publications on writing tutor pedagogy and practices to staff, faculty, and other stakeholder * Conduct ongoing program assessment through collection and evaluation of usage data
Coordinate the Writing Associates (WA) Program * Hire, train, and advise approximately 10 Writing Associates (WA) on integrating writing assignments and instruction into courses across the curriculum * Establish and maintain guidelines, operations and systems concerning the WA program, which include matching WAs to faculty members according to fit and schedule, approving time of WAs, etc. * Conduct on-going outreach to faculty members from across the curriculum for participation in the WA program * Develop tools and facilitate trainings to help WAs become effective partners with faculty members and provide effective support to students in their courses * Conduct ongoing program assessment through collection and evaluation of usage data * Stay current with research and trends in composition studies and writing center pedagogy, particularly options for online student support * Participate and contribute to campus-wide discussions that explore local writing values across campus
Publicity, Outreach, and Operations * Assist the SCAA Director and Office Manager with program publicity, outreach, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
|
|
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Preferred Skills & Knowledge
|
|
* A Master's degree or PhD in English, Composition/Rhetoric, ESOL, or related field. * Knowledge and experience with college-level composition, rhetoric, and writing pedagogy. * Experience working with or in writing centers/writing labs. * Experience in program management, particularly related to program design, implementation, and assessment. * Experience working with diverse, multilingual writers at the college level. * Demonstrated ability to independently carry complex assignments and anticipate and analyze problems of program-wide scope. * Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse campus community - students, faculty, and staff. * Knowledge of campus goals for student retention and how writing instruction impacts these goals.

Salary
|
|
Salary Range: $4,796.00/mo. to $6,841.00/mo. PLEASE NOTE: The anticipated starting salary will be from $4,796.00/mo. to $5,007.00/mo.
