    Brief Description:


    The University of San Diego’s Copley Library seeks an energetic and enthusiastic individual for a new library faculty position as Access and Outreach Services Librarian.  The successful candidate will manage circulation, interlibrary loan, document delivery, San Diego Circuit, copyright clearance permission, reserves, inventory, stack management, building security, disaster preparedness, and billing and collection of overdue fines and lost materials.


    Detailed Description:


    Reporting to the Dean of the University Library and working under the direction of the Head of Collections, Access, and Discovery, the Access and Outreach Services Librarian is responsible for supervising personnel, including one librarian, graduate assistants and work study students and managing all areas of the department.  The department includes circulation, interlibrary loan, document delivery, San Diego Circuit, copyright clearance permissions, reserves, inventory, stack management, building security, disaster preparedness, and billing and collection of overdue fines and lost materials.


    The Access and Outreach Services Librarian serves as a liaison for one subject area and will be responsible for cultivating a strong relationship with the department through consultations, collection development, instruction, and reference work.  He/she provides outreach services to non-academic departments such as Admissions, Athletics, Diversity, Student Services, International Students, Veterans, etc. This person provides copyright leadership for the library.  He/she possesses expert knowledge (power user) for the Innovative Interfaces integrated library automation system and monitors and implements all Innovative modules for circulation functions. He/she communicates with USD Public Safety about safety, security, and difficult patron issues and serves as the primary contact with emergency responders evenings and weekend. Duties also include maintaining a quiet study atmosphere in the Copley Library building and enforcing and following library and university policies.  He/she works some nights and weekend hours at the Circulation Desk.  This person must be active at the state and national levels in the library profession, especially in organizations committed to Access and Outreach Services.  This is a tenure-track library faculty position.


    The Access and Outreach Service Librarian must be able to work a varied schedule to cover and/or supervise Circulation Desk when needed.  Typically he/she is scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but will vary work hours one or two days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to provide supervision and to connect with evening staff.  The 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. schedule should be determined in consultation with the Head of Collections, Access, and Discovery.


    The Access and Outreach Services Librarian is responsible for ensuring Circulation Desk coverage during the two-week 24/7 finals period, which includes hiring additional temporary personnel to cover the library’s extended hours.  He/she will schedule Access Services staff, who are required to work during the 24/7 period.


    Job Requirements:


    Required: MLS or MLIS Degree; two or more years as a professional librarian in an academic library; experience with an integrated, online automation system; experience working in Circulation/Access Services Department; experience in Outreach Services in an academic library; demonstrated ability collecting and maintaining statistics; demonstrated management and supervisory skills; strong customer-service orientation; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member; demonstrated service on library and university committees and participation in professional development, as well as the ability to meet reappointment, promotion, and tenure criteria.


    Preferred: Expert knowledge (power user) of Innovative Interfaces Circulation Module (Sierra); working knowledge of copyright law and fair use guidelines; experience with assessment of user services and with consortial resource-sharing; and experience with and knowledge of trends in academic libraries as they relate to Access and Outreach Services.

    Salary and rank are commensurate with education and experience.  Librarians in Copley Library have faculty appointments and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, service, and otherwise meet reappointment, promotion, and tenure criteria.
