Challenges and Opportunities: One Academic Library, Seven Hospitals and a Consortial Move

Dr. Melanie McGurr, Associate Professor of Bibliography and Head, Electronic Services, University of Akron

Demetria Patrick, M.L.I.S., Technology Librarian, Northeast Ohio Medical University

The Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) is a medical university with no hospital of its own, but with an academic library and seven affiliated hospital libraries sharing one system, one cataloger, and one systems librarian. The consortial relationship is a long-standing one and some hospitals recently gained more independence, including implementing their own Discovery Layers and proxy servers, but without the staff to handle the more technical aspects of these resources.

This presentation explores a three-phase project that involved switching from a shared server hosted in a state consortia to a hosted service with Innovative Interfaces, along with a long overdue upgrade to Sierra. Phase I and II were the most challenging and work intensive and involved the most planning by the NEOMED staff. These challenges also brought our problem areas within the consortia to light. Throughout phase I and II, we improved our communication, stressed the importance of autonomy at the hospitals, and encouraged the staff to work directly with their IT and vendors. We created checklists for the hospitals with add-ons, started planning for orientation/training for Sierra early in the process, and held conference calls for questions and concerns on all aspects of the project. Documentation was also written for hospital IT staff to avoid firewall issues and explain LMS ports and other issues that might arise in an effort to avoid future problems.

ONIX and CIP:  How the Library of Congress Uses ONIX Data in the CIP Workflow

Caroline Saccucci, CIP and Dewey Program Manager, Library of Congress

Camilla Williams, CIP Program Specialist, Library of Congress

The Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Program uses ONIX metadata provided by publishers to assist with the cataloging and processing of CIP applications.  The summaries, tables of contents, and BISAC headings in ONIX metadata is highly useful to many libraries.  Find out how the CIP Program takes advantage of this publisher-supplied metadata source to enrich bibliographic records.

Can I Show This Video? Making PPR Visible to Patrons

Lynn E. Gates. Director of Cataloging and Metadata, Kraemer Family Library

UCCS Kraemer Family Library Research Assistance Desk staff are frequently asked about performance rights for videos in our collection by faculty and student groups who wish to show them under a variety of conditions. In the past RAD staff have had to contact acquisitions staff to acquire the information for the requestor. In response to this, Technical Services is adding information about KFL’s public performance rights (PPR) to catalog records for DVDs and streaming videos. As part of the process of making PPR information available, we had to work with our ILS (Sierra) and discovery layer (Summon) to ensure that the note field we choose is indexed and visible in search results.
