    POSITION DESCRIPTION: The University of Alabama in Huntsville’s M. Louis Salmon Library seeks a motivated, creative, and user-focused professional for the Research and Instructional Services Librarian position. Responsibilities include designing and conducting library instruction sessions, providing patron services at the Research Help Desk (assisting patrons with research questions and using library resources), and working with campus outreach activities to market library services and resources.


    Reporting to the Director of Research, Information, and User Services, the Research and Instructional Services Librarian aids the M. Louis Salmon Library in its mission to provide The University of Alabama in Huntsville with the discovery, creation, and communication of knowledge via the Salmon Library’s resources and services. This position works with campus faculty to develop library instruction materials for assignment-focused, course specific needs, as well as identifying opportunities for outreach in assigned academic departments. The ideal candidate possesses a strong desire to teach and seeks out further knowledge in teaching and learning theories. Primary responsibilities will include designing and conducting library instruction sessions for faculty and students, and working at the Research Help Desk to provide patron services such as research assistance and using library services and resources. The position will assist with future scholarly communications endeavors, such as: Open Access Initiatives, Open Educational Resources, and scholarly publishing trends. Candidate will work in a team environment in the library and must have a willingness for continual learning, development, and application of additional expertise through work related experiences and professional development opportunities. Candidate must also possess the ability to deal with change, ambiguity, and complex problems in an academic setting. This position may also provide outreach to academic and non-academic units, such as student housing, to develop events and services that promote the library’s services, supervise staff and students as required, and perform other duties/functions as requested.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Conduct various multidisciplinary instruction sessions for faculty and students by utilizing current and emerging technologies in the design and delivery of these sessions
    Consider new trends and techniques in information literacy instruction methods influenced by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy
    Coordinate with faculty to design course-integrated, assignment based instructional sessions as needed
    Integrate diverse teaching and activity types into information literacy sessions to promote collaborative, active, and directed learning styles
    Lead in the promotion of Open Access Initiatives (OAI), including Open Educational Resources (OER)
    Lead in future library initiatives in scholarly communications, including scholarly publishing, copyright, institutional repositories, and data curation
    Provide copyright guidance and instruction to faculty and students
    Answer research questions involving library resources and other materials
    Answer questions via LibChat, email, and other digital platforms
    Participate in library outreach activities
    Other duties as needed
    This position will include on-desk and off-desk duties, and will require some nights and weekends.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


    A Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or a master’s degree relevant to the individual’s subject specialty
    Minimum of one year providing instruction in a library setting
    Minimum of two years of academic library experience
    Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education
    Familiarity with current trends in scholarly communications, including: Open Access Initiatives, Open Educational Resources, copyright, and institutional repositories
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


    Experience working with customers/patrons to provide information and services
    Effective oral and written communication skills
    Knowledge of trends and services in academic libraries to support undergraduate and graduate education
    Knowledge of current and emerging trends in information literacy instruction and information technologies
    Understanding of ways to market and promote instruction, collections and services to various groups
    Experience with SpringShare’s LibGuides and LibAnswers
    Ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage projects
    Demonstration of ability, interest, and willingness to assume additional and/or new responsibilities, along with the ability to set and model high performance standards
    Possess a positive attitude, be future-oriented, and embrace change
    Skills to develop relevant and engaging promotional materials in collaboration with others
    Strong interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, and students in a friendly, professional manner
    Readiness to serve a diverse academic community with tact, diplomacy, and courtesy/friendliness
