    Position Summary:
    The Digital Preservation Coordinator manages digital preservation efforts for the Virginia Tech University Libraries by accomplishing the following:
    - Work with technologies such as Archivematica, BagIt, Archive-It to preserve unique scholarly digital content of enduring value to Virginia Tech and the Commonwealth
    - Process web-based content, digitized, and born-digital materials for preservation, including ingest, stabilization, and storage.
    - Create and manage procedures and workflows for digital preservation projects and practices to bring content into collaborative digital preservation storage systems such as Academic Preservation Trust, and MetaArchive.
    - Consult with individuals and departments on digital projects in support of faculty research.


    The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help expand a digital preservation program at a Carnegie R1: Research University and ARL member library. The successful applicant will work with diverse collections of 3D images, digitized archival materials, cultural heritage artifacts, audio-visual formats, and biodiversity specimens. The Digital Preservation Coordinator will report to the Assistant Director for Digital Imaging and Preservation Services.


    Responsibilities:
    - Coordinate digital preservation operations at Virginia Tech University Libraries in partnership with the Assistant Director, the Libraries’ digital repository teams, and collection management and metadata specialists.
    - Contribute to Virginia Tech’s participation in MetaArchive, and Academic Preservation Trust.
    - Manage digital preservation workflows and microservices through Archivematica’s GUI.
    - Manage Virginia Tech web archiving workflows and procedures and perform bi-annual crawls of the university’ web presence.
    - Evaluates and tests new digital preservation technologies, tools, and protocols.
    - Consults and guides faculty, staff, and students on digital preservation standards, practices, and operations.


    Required Qualifications:
    - Master’s or other advanced degree in a field related to the position OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field and significant experience with digital preservation
    - Demonstrated experience with a variety of digital preservation technologies
    - Knowledge of digital preservation issues, strategies, standards, practices, including various assessment tools such as iso16363/TDR, and NDSA Levels of Preservation
    - Understanding of the application of the OAIS reference model for digital preservation
    - Knowledge of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, METS, PREMIS
    - Knowledge of digital formats (image, audio, video, object, text) and their associated best practices for preservation
    - Project management skills, including planning, organization, and time management.
    - Ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with diverse teams across departments and disciplines
    - Demonstrated ability to adjust priorities, manage time wisely, and make quick, effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.
    - Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, oral, and written communication skills


    Preferred Qualifications:
    - Master’s degree or other advanced degree with an emphasis in library and information science, or other relevant field
    - Experience with batch processing related to digital curation is a high priority
    - Experience with web-archiving tools such as Archive-It
    - Experience with repository software such as D-Space and Fedora
    - Professional experience working in an academic library
    - Knowledge of current issues in digital libraries.
    - Experience executing command-line scripts.
    - Experience training and instructing in digital preservation techniques and processes
