    SDSU’s Hilton M. Briggs Library welcomes applications for the position of First-year Experience Librarian. The successful candidate is an energetic and collaborative librarian with a passion for information literacy and student success. S/He will coordinate the library’s first-year instruction initiatives, provide undergraduate instruction, build relationships with other campus units working on student success, engage in ongoing assessment of student learning and program success as well as provide reference and research consultations. The position reports to the Head of Public Services.


    RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Coordinates library curriculum and instructional activities for first-year courses including English 101, Speech 101 and University College 109/119 in close collaboration with other librarians and departmental program coordinators.
    • Provides undergraduate instruction, particularly for English 101, Speech 101 and UC 109/119 and other courses targeting first-year students.
    • Works closely with other librarians in the creation, implementation and assessment of learning objectives for first-year information literacy.
    • Engages in outreach and collaboration with key campus partners that support the first-year experience, e.g., student success, tutoring centers, admissions and other areas of SDSU.
    • Engages in ongoing assessment of student learning and of first-year experience initiatives
    • Provides liaison, outreach and support to University College and/or other departments as assigned.
    • Provides reference service and research consultations with students and faculty at a general service desk, including staffing weekend and evening shifts as assigned.
    • Keeps abreast of pedagogical theories and practices, particularly as they relate to new students.
    • Designs and produces instructional materials in various formats, including online tutorials, user guides and training materials to meet a variety of student needs.
    • Provides service to the library, SDSU and the profession.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or equivalent by the start date.
    • Demonstrated teaching experience.
    • Knowledge of trends and services in higher education and academic libraries to support first-year experience programs.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a collegial, team-based environment and maintain positive working relationships.
    • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills as well as strong service orientation.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Additional Masters degree
    • Two years of experience teaching in academic libraries
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with information literacy concepts and trends (e.g., the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and curriculum mapping)
    • Experience in instruction in face-to-face and online environments, including the design of interactive instructional materials and activities as well as presentation techniques and skills.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience providing in-person and virtual reference services.
    • Experience with assessment of student learning and instructional programming.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary and emerging information technologies such as web authoring tools and technologies, social media, digital learning objects, screencasting and LibGuides.

Hilton M. Briggs Library serves all SDSU academic disciplines and holds approximately 668,000 bound volumes, 1 million microforms, and over 500,000 government publications in addition to 31,000 electronic subscriptions. The library staff consists of 30 full time employees and eight to fifteen student employees.


    SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,100 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance.
