Initiative Updates

Spectrum is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2017! The Celebration of the Spectrum 20th Anniversary will launch with kick-off activities in conjunction with National Library Workers Day on  April 11, 2017.  Planned activities include bringing together 20 Community Organizers (1 from each cohort and geographically spread across the country) to support one another in community building, awareness and fundraising activities through December 31. A face to face celebration at ALA Annual Conference will also be held.

Program milestones in the last six months include:

  • The ALCTS 2017 Midwinter Symposium Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Creating a New Future for Library Collections featured Spectrum Scholars Charlotte Roh, Harrison Inefuku, and Mark Puente. The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services additionally has provided      complimentary attendance to all Spectrum Scholars wishing to attend.
  • Alejandra de Santiago at the University of Missouri and Seungyeon Yang-Peace at San Jose State University are recipients of the 2017 Crossing the Finish Line follow-up grants for students completing their degree and planning to continue or begin working in Children's Services. These grants are generously sponsored by Past President of ALSC Ellen Fader. Special thanks to Spectrum Scholars Annisha Jeffries, Beatriz P. Wallace, Joy Shioshita, and Rita Vargas for their service on the selection committee.
  • Currently seventeen Spectrum Scholars are participating as mentees in ACRL’s Dr. E.J. Josey      Spectrum Scholar Mentor Program, and an additional call for participation will  go out this Spring to match Scholars with mentors in advance of ALA Annual Conference. In November 2016, 2003 Spectrum Scholar Alanna Aiko Moore, Sociology, Ethnic Studies and Gender Studies Librarian at UC San Diego Library, offered a training on cross-cultural mentoring exclusively for mentors participating in the ACRL Dr. E.J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentor Program.  Another call for mentees is currently open to the current Scholars, the committee will work to match applicants with mentors in advance of the ACRL National Conference next month.
  • 2003 Spectrum Scholar Christiane Warburton has been accepted into the 2017 PLA Leadership      Academy taking place March 20-24.  Warburton has also been selected to receive a Spectrum Scholar Travel Grant sponsored by PLA, with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and ALA’s Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services.
