    The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a creative, collaborative, self-motivated, enthusiastic professional for the position of Open Access Librarian. The individual in this position will assist in implementing and maintaining open access work at UNC-Chapel Hill with activities that include formulating and managing a plan to open up relevant content that is behind paywalls; doing outreach and coordinating events related to open access, such as group events for repository deposit and talks and presentations about open access; and answering specific questions and solving problems about open access for students, faculty, and staff.


    POSITION DESCRIPTION:


    UNC Chapel Hill Libraries seeks an Institutional Repository Librarian to support open access initiatives and the Carolina Digital Repository (CDR). The Institutional Repository Librarian manages institutional repository collections, systems and the community of users. This individual will work closely with other members of the Library and Information Technology, Scholarly Communications, and Metadata units to implement infrastructure and services that support the Carolina Open Access Policy.


    Job duties include the deposit, description and management of content over time for preservation and access in the CDR, ensuring accuracy and quality control of all content housed in the repository, keeping with emerging standards and best practices. The Institutional Repository Librarian will provide documentation and training for faculty, students and staff related to self- and mediated deposit, as well as IR policies and services. The individual will actively seek feedback from the user community in order to improve services and tools. In addition, the Institutional Repository Librarian may manage projects related to open access.


    The Institutional Repository Librarian will serve on library and campus committees and participate in national and regional working groups related to repositories, data curation, research data support, and open access. Demonstrated professional achievement, service, and scholarly activity are required for reappointment and promotion in rank.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:



    •  ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or advanced degree in a related field

    • Experience managing and describing digital content in a repository or content management system.

    • Ability to work independently and to perform detailed work accurately.

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

    • Ability to work through problems methodically.

    • Familiarity with institutional repositories and with other technology commonly used in libraries and offices.

    • Must be flexible in a fast-paced environment with rapid changes, and have the demonstrated ability to work with diverse constituents with a variety of levels of skill and understanding.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



    • Work experience in a university setting and with institutional repositories.

    • Familiarity with the research data lifecycle.

    • Familiarity with the concepts of data curation and the OAIS reference model, and metadata schemas such as MODS, RDF, or Dublin Core

    • Experience assessing and transforming data using tools such as Microsoft Excel, OpenRefine or scripting languages.

    • Experience with CSS/HTML and XML.

    • Coursework or familiarity with scholarly communication issues in higher education.

    • Experience teaching and training others.

    • Experience gathering user requirements and working with software developers.

    • Experience managing projects
