    The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a creative, collaborative, self-motivated, enthusiastic professional for the position of Open Access Librarian. The individual in this position will assist in implementing and maintaining open access work at UNC-Chapel Hill with activities that include formulating and managing a plan to open up relevant content that is behind paywalls; doing outreach and coordinating events related to open access, such as group events for repository deposit and talks and presentations about open access; and answering specific questions and solving problems about open access for students, faculty, and staff.


    POSITION DESCRIPTION:


    The Open Access Librarian will report to and work closely with the Scholarly Communications Officer and will work closely with relevant staff from Library and Information Technology and other relevant units. With the assistance of other library staff members, this individual will provide first-line support for users who have questions about or problems with the institutional repository. Job duties will include the development, implementation, and management of a plan to identify and ingest content into the institutional repository, especially content that is not currently open. This individual also will do outreach and education for scholarly communication within the university community, especially emphasizing content recruitment, and will provide guidance and education on copyright basics, policy issues, and the mechanics of self-submission of material to the institutional repository for students, faculty, and staff. The Open Access Librarian will develop and help implement strategies and materials for marketing the Carolina Digital Repository. This individual may supervise research assistants, interns, or student workers.


    The Open Access Librarian will serve on library and campus committees and participate in regional and national working groups related to copyright and scholarly communications. The individual in this position is expected to be active in scholarly and library professional organizations and the academic community. Demonstrated professional achievement, service, and scholarly/creative activity are required for reappointment and promotion in rank.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:



    • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information science or advanced degree in a related field

    • A demonstrated interested in scholarly communications issues in higher education and a basic understanding of bibliographic standards and conventions

    • Ability to work independently and to perform detailed work accurately

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

    • Ability to work through problems methodically

    • Familiarity with institutional repositories and with other technology commonly used in libraries and offices

    • Must be flexible in a fast-paced environment with rapid changes, and have the demonstrated ability to work with diverse constituents with a variety of levels of skill and understanding


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



    • Work experience in a university setting and with institutional repositories

    • Experience with using automated tools, such as design software, video production and social media, for communication, outreach and marketing

    • Experience with or training in project management techniques.
