POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a motivated, energetic, innovative, collaborative, and knowledgeable individual for the position of Associate Director of Library Development. The individual in this position will develop and execute long- and short-term strategies to secure major gifts ($25,000 and up) in support of the academic mission and priorities of the University Libraries. This position will manage a portfolio of prospects and donors for the entire University Libraries, including the Davis Library, Wilson Special Collections Library, House Undergraduate Library, Health Sciences Library, Sloane Art Library, Kenan Science Library, School of Information and Library Science Library, the Stone Center Library, and the Music Library.
Under the direction of the Director of Library Development, the Associate Director will identify and manage a group of about 100 prospects for major gifts. This will include local and national travel for qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The Associate Director will arrange appropriate opportunities for key library administrators to meet with potential donors and will arrange for other’s participation as appropriate. This will include meetings with individuals in their local communities and regional events to bring attention to Library needs, collections, and programs. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director of Library Development to plan and execute the University Library’s campaign, which will run through 2022 with a tentative goal set between $40 million and $50 million. The Associate Director may be responsible for the implementation and management of special campaigns such as reunion class gifts, endowments for specific areas, or other special projects within the Library. The work will include writing proposals and/or preparing materials for use in specific solicitations.
In conjunction with the Director of Library Development, the Associate Director will participate in other related development activities designed to enhance a successful fund-raising program and will carry out other such responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director. The work environment of the University Libraries encourages collaboration with professionals throughout the organization and the Associate Director will have the opportunity to work closely with librarians who are experts in a variety of subject areas including geographic area studies, humanities, the arts, and the sciences. There is a strong atmosphere of support for all development activities, including willing and creative participation in special events, donor education, proposal development, grant-writing and stewardship.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor’s degree. Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of major gift identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Basic understanding of planned giving methods. Demonstrated success in professional fund-raising and development; knowledge and understanding of the nature and purpose of public higher education; demonstrated experience in making, and eagerness to make, discovery calls to engage new prospects; demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks; exceptional written and oral communication skills (writing samples or test may be requested as part of the interview process); demonstrated experience working with and managing volunteers and boards. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and enthusiastically in a research university setting. Must be willing and able to travel locally or nationally seven to nine days per month, and occasionally to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred:
Knowledge of North Carolina and the University of North Carolina. Experience collaborating with, motivating, and/or mentoring colleagues to meet or exceed fundraising goals. Experience working in a metrics-driven fundraising setting. Experience utilizing events to engage prospects and donors. Experience working collaboratively as part of a small team or department. Interest in continuing education to stay knowledgeable about trends in library fundraising and higher education fundraising.
