    ARCHIVIST FOR ORANGE COUNTY REGIONAL HISTORY


    The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks a knowledgeable, innovative, and dynamic professional for the position of Archivist for Orange County Regional History in the Department of Special Collections &Archives.

    Duties and Responsibilities


    The Archivist for Orange County Regional History is responsible for developing, making accessible, and advocating for archives and special collections materials as well as oral history and documentation initiatives relating to the history of the Orange County, California region. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections & Archives and University Archivist, the Archivist for Orange County Regional History works collaboratively within the department to acquire collections and determine appropriate approaches to preparing collections for use. The Archivist implements uniform arrangement and description standards and ensures that collections are efficiently and effectively processed and described. The Archivist participates in archival processing, metadata, and cataloging activities for relevant special collections materials and digital projects. The Archivist works in partnership with the Archivist for the Southeast Asian Archive to lead the instructional and programmatic activities of the Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive (OC&SEAA) Center, including developing, consulting, and engaging in archival outreach, instruction, and oral history initiatives of the UCI Libraries on the UCI campus (faculty, students, and staff) and in the community. The Archivist coordinates the life cycle of digital and physical oral history assets created within or acquired by the department, including conversion, transcription, description, and online delivery strategies. The Archivist for Orange County Regional History may participate in exhibits, donor relations, and grant proposals as appropriate.

    Qualifications


    Required:
    • A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or a graduate degree in archival studies, or equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
    • Significant recent experience in a special collections and/or archives setting.
    • Education or training in archives management and oral history.
    • Experience working with local history materials and/or developing community-based archival collections.
    • Experience processing archival collections and preparing finding aids.
    • Understanding of and commitment to nationally-accepted standards, tools, and best practices for archival processing and description, including Describing Archives: a Content Standard and the University of California Guidelines for Efficient Archival Processing.
    • Working knowledge and experience with technological applications and digital libraries to include digital platforms and formats, systems, software, metadata, controlled vocabularies, and archival encoding standards.
    • Familiarity with ArchivesSpace and Encoded Archival Description.
    • Ability to keep abreast of oral history protocols, standards, and best practices.
    • Knowledge and skills in analyzing demographic information.
    • Familiarity with building and contributing to collaborative archival collections, digital archival collections, and using shared repository platforms.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills, as well as effectiveness in balancing and completing multiple assignments and projects.
    • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within the UCI Libraries and the campus.
    • Ability to analyze, learn, and implement evolving technologies.
    • Ability to successfully train and direct the work of library assistants and student assistants.
    • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion.


    Preferred:
    • Knowledge of the history of Orange County, California, including its changing demographics.
    • Experience building community partnerships.
    • Experience conducting oral history interviews.
    • Experience in writing grants and/or implementing grant projects.
    • Familiarity with the digital and archival collections of the University of California, including the Online Archive of California and Calisphere.
    • Experience managing digitization projects and/or born-digital archival content.
    • Knowledge of or work with Encoded Archival Context for Corporate bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF).
    • Recent experience providing reference service in a research or academic library.
    • Experience directing the work of archival processing assistants.
    • Experience working with local government information resources.


    Orange County Regional History Collection


    The UCI Libraries actively collects materials related to the history of the Orange County, California region. Special Collections & Archives seeks to document the history of Orange County from the mission period through the present: collection strengths include urban planning and development, the Irvine Ranch and the City of Irvine, environmental issues, city histories, political issues and leadership, LGBTQ history, visual and performing arts, as well as under-documented ethnic communities (including Southeast Asian Americans, Korean Americans, African Americans, Chicano/Latino Americans, Persian Americans, Native Americans, and refugee communities). The Special Collections & Archives collections include photographs, family papers, organizational records, maps, postcards, newspapers, government documents, books, serials, and ephemera.


    The Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive (OC&SEAA) Center


    The mission of the Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive (OC&SEAA) Center – a unit of the Department of Special Collections & Archives in the University of California, Irvine Libraries – is to provide instruction, training, and research resources for the UC Irvine community to document and preserve the diverse histories of the Orange County, California region. The OC&SEAA Center also oversees and collects oral history archives that complement the collection strategies of the UC Irvine Libraries.
    The Department of Special Collections & Archives
    Special Collections & Archives houses the UCI Libraries' collections of manuscripts and archives, rare books, and notable subject collections. Archival collecting areas of particular strength and distinction include regional history (emphasizing Orange County and Southern California), the Southeast Asian Archive, the Critical Theory Archive (including the papers of Jacques Derrida, Wolfgang Iser, Paul de Man, and others), the University Archives (documenting the UC Irvine campus), dance and the performing arts (including the papers of Robert Cohen and choreographers Donald McKayle and Eugene Loring), and distinguished UCI faculty (including Nobel Laureates Frederick Reines and Sherwood Rowland). The Special Collections & Archives Department consists of 7 librarians (including the Department Head), 3 library assistants, and a number of student assistants and interns.


    The UCI Libraries

    Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California pay scales. Appointment is anticipated to be at the Assistant or Associate Librarian rank with a salary of $48,438 - $74,337.
    Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
