    POSITION DESCRIPTION:


    The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks an energetic, creative, and highly collaborative individual to provide reference and instruction services and to supervise, train, and mentor approximately ten Graduate Assistants with a focus on enhancing user interactions with the Library and its resources. This position requires a diverse set of skills encompassing the development, provision, evaluation, and marketing of services to support research, inquiry and discovery in an academic environment; a passion for improving the user experience, and the ability to learn and adapt to rapidly changing technologies. The individual selected for this position will have experience in, and enthusiasm for, providing a wide range of services directly to library users utilizing a variety of in-person and online methods.

    Applicants should enjoy challenges and be able to handle fluid situations. Individuals must be self-directed and also be able to work effectively in a team environment. Reporting to the Head of Research and Information Services (RIS), the Reference Services & Instruction Librarian is responsible for supervising Graduate Assistants (GAs) in RIS, providing direct reference services to users, and working collaboratively to improve the user experience and encourage user engagement across the Library’s online and in-person services. S/he provides individual, classroom, and group instruction in academic library research strategies and information literacy skill development.


    QUALIFICATIONS:


    Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent by start of employment;
    Experience providing reference services at a public service desk in an academic environment;
    Experience leading group instruction;
    Track record of collaboration and positive contributions in a team environment;

    Experience working with diverse populations;
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
    Evidence of ability to perform research, publication, and service consonant with university standards for tenure.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Supervisory experience;
    Experience training faculty, students and/or staff in professional development workshops or other classroom teaching experience;
    Experience applying methodologies such as focus groups and ethnographic research;
    Coursework, training or experience in user experience research methods;
    Knowledge of website design, development, implementation, standards, and accessibility/usability guidelines;
    Experience with project management.
