DevOps Engineer, MIT Libraries
**This is a full-time, three-year term appointment, with the possibility of extension.**
The MIT Libraries are seeking an experienced and creative DevOps Engineer to work closely with Systems Administrators, Developers, Project Managers and others to design, implement and continually improve processes, workflows and tools that support the Libraries’ growing development operations environment.
The DevOps Engineer will be primarily focused on defining, documenting and supporting application deployment best practices, and providing expertise and ongoing support and maintenance procedures in order to ensure high availability, consistency, and adherence to best practices for systems administration and software development.
Specifically, the engineer will:
• Architect, monitor, maintain and support the Libraries’ production development and release environment.
• Perform updates to deployed applications and supporting software libraries. Actively monitor servers and applications and respond to system-level incidents, and application-level events when possible.
• In cooperation with service-providing stakeholders, codify service level agreements and uptime expectations. Help provision and maintain testing infrastructure, including integration and load testing.
• Perform systems administration tasks as needed. Act as a liaison between Libraries’ software developers and the operations team.
QUALIFICATIONS include some combination of:
• A degree in computer science, library science, another relevant field, or equivalent in coursework plus experience
• Demonstrated experience with the following:
o Hardware virtualization environments, especially VMware
o Cloud technologies such (e.g. AWS, GCE, Heroku, GAE, EBS, Azure)
o Container technology, e.g. Docker
o One or more automated provisioning frameworks: Puppet, Chef, or Ansible
o Server-side technologies including Apache Solr, Apache HTTP Server, Tomcat
o Management and deployment of SQL Database clusters (PostgreSQL)
o Scripting in one or more open source languages (e.g. Bash, Ruby, Python)
o Distributed version control, preferably Git/Github
o Testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment frameworks (e.g. Jenkins)
o Managing a complex workload and shifting priorities
• Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills
• As technologies change at a rapid pace, the successful candidate must be willing to learn new skills, tools, and methodologies.
• Ability to share responsibility for off-hour response to outages which are extremely rare.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience writing and maintaining documentation
• Ability to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment: appropriately taking initiative, or seeking guidance, working independently or collaboratively, coordinating projects, leading teams, and helping others succeed.
DevOps Engineer for Library Systems
Technology Systems and Support Services (TS3)
Preferred:
• Experience working in a large academic library or similar cultural heritage institution
• Experience with Library applications such as D-Space, Hydra and Fedora
• Exposure to hardware load balancing technologies and techniques
• Experience using at least one open source programming language and/or web framework (e.g. Ruby/Rails, PHP/Drupal, Python/WSGI, Java/Tomcat)
• Single sign-on authentication services (LDAP, Shibboleth, and/or Active Directory)
• A commitment to Open Source Software development
SALARY AND BENEFITS: $80,000 is minimum entry-level salary. Actual salary will depend on qualifications and experience.
