Committee Goals 2016-2017 and Past Goals

Our Charge:

To offer programming, forums for discussions, and professional development opportunities focused on effective communication, teaching strategies, skills, and technologies used at all patron points-of-need. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the reference interview, teachable moments during the reference interaction, and point-of-need videos or tutorials.

Goals 2016-2017:

- Determine if we will hold an annual discussion forum at ALA Annual, and, if so, plan for the discussion forum.

- Maintain/develop current bibliography (linked below).

- Develop ideas for a best practices document for communication and teaching at the point of need. (Document itself can carry over into future years).

- Continue to mine results of 2014 survey to determine future topics of focus for the committee.

Previous Years:

Goals 2015-2016

  • Reexamine the survey results to develop an activity for the Annual Meeting – Discussion Forum, Posters on Point of Need Reference/Instruction, etc.
  • Look at other efforts across divisions: ACRL-Peer Reviewed Instructional Materials Online (PRIMO) and others that we can identify.
  • From previously listed committee goals: build a portfolio of best practices for engaging at the point of need and resources to assist with meeting challenges that arose in the survey data  - Expand/update the Bibliography: http://connect.ala.org/node/233262

Goals 2014-2015:

Our initial plans are to carry on work started last year with the distribution of a survey to gather information to aid in planning programs, discussion forums, and professional development opportunities. Once survey results have been gathered and analyzed, the committee will brainstorm activities to implement over the coming year.
