Library Instruction Program Coordinator
The University of California, Santa Barbara is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the exclusive Association of American Universities (AAU). The UCSB Library seeks dynamic, highly motivated candidates with passion for information literacy to apply for the position of Library Instruction Program Coordinator.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Head of Reference Services, the Library Instruction Program Coordinator plans, develops, coordinates, evaluates, and promotes the UCSB Library’s instruction program. The instruction program includes a multi-section credit-bearing library research course offered throughout the academic year, and a robust information literacy partnership with the UCSB Writing Program, and is well-poised to expand. The program coordinator also provides support to Subject Librarians with instructional roles.
The Library Instruction Program Coordinator:
•manages the library’s credit-bearing library research courses; schedules and trains librarian instructors, and leads curriculum design, program promotion and assessment,
•coordinates the library’s instructional relationship with the Writing Program and the provision of information literacy sessions; schedules and trains librarian instructors, and leads curriculum design, program promotion and assessment for these sessions,
•designs, implements, and evaluates learning resources that integrate technology into the information literacy curriculum to achieve desired learning outcomes,
•serves as Subject Librarian for the UCSB Writing Program and participates in the library’s Social Sciences Collection Group,
•oversees maintenance, librarian training, and best-practices development for library research guides (LibGuides),
•consults with Subject Librarians on library instruction design as needed; partners with faculty and Subject Librarians to develop meaningful instructional content that fosters critical thinking skills,
•provides evaluations for individual Subject Librarians with instructional roles as part of the review and promotion process,
•works with the Assessment Coordinator Librarian to systematically assess UCSB student information literacy needs and faculty instructional goals,
•works with the Student Success Librarian and AUL for Outreach & Academic Collaboration in seeking opportunities to collaborate with campus partners, including Instructional Development and the Transfer Student Center,
•works with library and campus IT and the library’s Learning Organization Librarian to maintain technology resources in the library’s instruction and training rooms,
•promotes the UCSB Library instruction program to campus entities, faculty and students,
•participates in scheduled multi-disciplinary reference desk service and online chat reference for the UC Cooperative, and
•may perform other duties as assigned, based on incumbent qualifications and library needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
•ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science
•Academic background and/or knowledge of information literacy instruction demonstrated through coursework and work experience
•Demonstrated experience of at least three (3) years of professional experience providing information literacy instruction in an academic setting
•Ability to create instructional materials and utilize web design tools and other technologies to meet instructional goals
•Understanding of current and emerging trends in information literacy research and scholarship, scholarly communication, and academic libraries
•Demonstrated experience providing reference services in an academic setting
•A strong commitment to excellence in public service, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative and culturally diverse environment
•Demonstrated initiative and flexibility,
•Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
•Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community users
Preferred:
•Experience developing, implementing, and assessing an academic information literacy program
•Demonstrated engagement with ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, and other information literacy standards
•Experience with instructional design and technology, including developing online research guides (LibGuides), information literacy tutorials, and other multimedia learning resources
•Experience incorporating data discovery, data visualization, and/or visual literacy competencies into library instruction
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month. The University has an excellent retirement system which is coordinated with Social Security. A selection of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are offered by the University.
The incumbent will be a member of the LX Collective Bargaining Unit represented by the American Federation of Teachers.
