    DESCRIPTION


    BLACK STUDIES LIBRARIAN


    The University of California, Santa Barbara is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the exclusive Association of American Universities (AAU). In addition, the University Library at UC Santa Barbara is a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries (ARL).


    The UC Santa Barbara Library seeks a collaborative, dynamic, service-oriented librarian to foster excellence in scholarship and teaching by facilitating access to scholarly information resources in Black Studies. The successful candidate will actively engage and build relationships with campus scholarly communities in the assigned areas, serving as an expert resource to support traditional and emerging research practices and curricular development.


    RESPONSIBILITIES


    Reporting to the Head of Reference Services the Black Studies Librarian enhances research, teaching, and learning by shaping the library’s research collections in Black Studies, and related interdisciplinary areas; contributes to the library’s general reference services and instructional programs; provides specialized instructional sessions and research services for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in the assigned areas, including consultation on scholarly communication issues and new methodologies and practices in digital scholarship; works collaboratively with the library’s data services team including curators and librarians to support evolving needs of relevant user communities in conducting data-intensive research; advocates, promotes, and contributes to the library’s new services in digital scholarship; and builds and sustains trusted relationships with key campus constituencies to further the library’s strategic goals and advance the research, teaching and service mission of the university. Coordinates with other Ethnic and Gender Studies, and Social Sciences subject librarians to plan and develop projects and contributes to area-specific consortial activities of the UC Libraries.


    Participating in the Area, Ethnic & Gender Studies, and the Social Sciences Collection Groups, the Black Studies Librarian has responsibility for all aspects of collection management and development for Black Studies. Responsibilities include selection of information resources, collection management and evaluation, faculty liaison, budgetary management, and resource sharing, including participation in University of California system-wide collection development and preservation projects for print and digital resources. Provides engaged, knowledgeable liaison and collaboration with Black Studies faculty and students to develop their awareness of the complex and changing scholarly information environment. Collaborates in the development of both print and digital collections relating to Black Studies, maintaining awareness of developments in scholarly communication, intellectual rights, and publishing. In partnership with curators in Special Research Collections, contributes to developing distinctive physical and digital collections and integrating the library’s rich primary source materials into campus curricula in the relevant subject areas.


    The Black Studies Librarian works individually and as part of the Reference Services and Instruction teams to contribute to creative and innovative approaches to advancing the Library's services. Participates in scheduled multi-disciplinary reference desk service, online chat reference for the UC cooperative, research consultation and instruction in assigned disciplines, and outreach activities. Includes some evening assignments. Participates in an active instructional program, including teaching a credit-bearing library research class. Develops and delivers presentations to specialized classes and provides individualized assistance to students and faculty in Black Studies. Designs and maintains online guides to specialized library resources.


    QUALIFICATIONS


    Required:
    •ALA-accredited Master’s in Library or Information Science.
    •Academic background and/or knowledge of Black Studies, Sociology, or related disciplines demonstrated through undergraduate, or advanced degree, coursework, or work experience.
    •Demonstrated experience in reference and library instruction.
    •Ability to create instructional materials and utilize web design tools to facilitate instructional goals.


    •Understanding of current and emerging trends in Black Studies and Sociology scholarship.


    •A strong commitment to excellence in public service and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative and culturally diverse environment.
    •Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    •Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and community users,


    Preferred:
    •Advanced degree in Black Studies, or related disciplines.
    •Advanced degree in Sociology, or significant course work or experience in Sociology.
    •Two to three years of professional experience in an academic library.
    •Chat reference experience.
    •Knowledge or experience working with scholarly communication issues.


    SALARY AND BENEFITS


    Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month. The University has an excellent retirement system which is coordinated with Social Security. A selection of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are offered by the University.


    The incumbent will be a member of the LX Collective Bargaining Unit represented by the American Federation of Teachers.
