    The University Library at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) seeks an innovative Head of Collection Management and Technical Services (CMTS) at the level of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian. This position is tenure-track. Tenure may be offered in exceptional circumstances. This position will provide leadership in acquiring and making discoverable information resources in a variety of formats to the University community. Reporting to the Dean of the Library, the Head of CMTS will oversee the Library’s collections budget in consultation with the Dean, Associate Dean, Collection Management Librarian and Library subject specialists and is responsible for functional oversight of collection access and management, including acquisitions, collection development, metadata creation, materials processing, and database and electronic resources management. The CMTS Head will facilitate workflows and engage with new technologies and enhancement opportunities in response to user needs and priorities of the University Library. This position will also play an important role in Library resource discovery and will provide leadership in the ongoing implementation and improvement of Ex Libris’ Alma library management system with regard to acquisitions and metadata. The Head of CMTS will lead the work of seven library staff members by fostering a creative, collaborative, and team-oriented work environment, and facilitating communication and coordination with other departments in the Library. The Head of CMTS will partner with the Associate Dean and Heads of the Teaching and Learning, User Services, and Library Technology Initiatives and Development Departments. This position will serve on the Library Cabinet, which operates as the Library’s leadership team.


    Minimum requirements for the position include: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent. Experience in leadership of a technical services or similar unit within an academic library. Demonstrated experience supervising or directing the work of staff. Demonstrated success in collaborative work focused on user experiences within an academic library. Strong knowledge of current trends in technical services. Experience with library collection budget management. Project management and/or workflow analysis experience. Ability to use technology in creative ways to solve problems and create efficiencies. Demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion under the Library's criteria for professional performance, scholarship and service. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.


    Preferred requirements for the position include: Three to five years of experience in leadership of a technical services or similar unit within an academic library. Demonstrated success in leadership of a technical services or similar unit within an academic library. Experience working in an environment where both faculty and staff are unionized. Experience working with the Ex Libris unified library management system. Experience working with an integrated library system within a technical services environment. Statistical or data analysis experience. Expertise in national metadata content standards (e.g. RDA, PCC, AACR2, DACS, etc.) and MARC and non-MARC encoding/structural standards (e.g., Dublin Core, XML, EAD, etc.). Knowledge of best practices in applying metadata in a discovery system (e.g., Primo, Omeka, Islandora) or institutional repository (e.g. DSpace). Experience in organizing and implementing training programs within the area of technical services. Published and/or presented on research related to technical services in academic libraries. Participation in local, regional or national professional organizations. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in professional performance, research, and/or service.


    Specific Duties:


    Collaboratively creates, maintains, and continuously improves procedures and workflows for all areas of collection management and technical services.
    Oversees the Library’s collections budget in consultation with the Dean, Associate Dean, Collection Management Librarian and Library subject specialists
    Provides leadership in the ongoing implementation and improvement of Ex Libris’ Alma library management system with regard to acquisitions and metadata.
    Provides leadership in furthering best practices, workflows, and policies for the shared library management system. Participates in the California State University Unified Library Management System community as appropriate.
    Enables prompt and effective access to newly acquired scholarly resources.
    Oversees, develops, and assesses the cataloging and maintenance of bibliographic and metadata records for the Libraries scholarly resources;
    Provides resource discovery expertise across a variety of formats.
    Ensures the quality of metadata in the resource discovery tools and develops innovative and effective approaches to metadata processes.
    Provides lead work direction for the Collection Management and Technical Services Department, including acquisitions, collection development, metadata creation, materials processing, and database and electronic resources management.
    Organizes and monitors the workload and staffing of the department (7.0 FTE), including participating in the recruitment process, overseeing the staff evaluation process, and facilitating access to appropriate staff development opportunities. Encourages cross-training across functions for increased efficiency.
    Represents the Collection Management and Technical Services Department on the Library's leadership team. Takes a Library-wide orientation and works closely with department head colleagues to implement the Library’s vision and strategic plan.
    Makes recommendations to the Dean on department budget, staff, and facility needs.
    Serves on University Library Standing Committees as appropriate.
    Pursues a strong research agenda within the field of academic librarianship or job-related field.
    Actively participates in library, university and/or professional-level service commitments.
