    Suggestions for Additional Activities

Making the most of ALA Annual Conference

Here are some tips for enjoying and planning your time:

    • Did you know that over 20,000 people attend the ALA Annual Conference each year?! There are literally hundreds of things to do at any given minute.  So prepare for that but know you will have plenty of Spectrum colleagues to help you navigate it all, and that this time is for *your* networking and professional development -- enjoy it!

    • While your Spectrum events are conveniently all taking place in one hotel, the conference is spread out through the Convention Center and a number of hotels.  Free shuttle buses sponsored by Gale Cengage can help you get between locations.  See http://2016.alaannual.org/local-transportation.

    • Review the Scheduler to identify events that interest you and add them to your personalized schedule.  See the tips below for using the Scheduler.

    • During our time at the Institute, you are encouraged to talk with your fellow scholars and alumni about what sessions you plan to attend and to ask questions from your peers, many of whom are seasoned conference goers.

    • All events that noted as Open and "Included with full conference registration" are free to attend, you are registered for the full conference.  Any events that have an additional cost and don't conflict with your Spectrum Institute are also ones you may attend if they are still accepting registration.  Visit the Registration area in the Convention Center to purchase tickets.

    • It's completely acceptable to pop into a conference program and if it's not what you thought it would be, exit and go to another session.

    • Review additional tips for First Time Conference Attendees at http://2016.alaannual.org/resources-first-time-attendees

    • Explore the local community. View information on Orlando women- and minority-owned businesses and learn more about the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes of Florida at http://2016.alaannual.org/local-transportation.

Using the Scheduler and Mobile App

    • Identify your login for ala.org by going to any page on www.ala.org and clicking on login on the top right of any page.  You can use your ALA member ID or your email at which you receive ALA emails to recover your login.  Note: this is the same login you will use on the Conference Scheduler/Mobile App and on ALA Connect.

    • Go to the Scheduler at https://www.eventscribe.com/2016/ala-annual/ (or the App) and use your login.

    • You can now star sessions to build your personal calendar for conference.

Prepare to have fun and make new friends!

    Hi all,

As a 2005-2006 ALA Spectrum Scholar and the current YALSA President, I'd like to cordially invite all members of the Spectrum family to attend any and all of YALSA's events at ALA Annual, especially YALSA's Membership Meeting and President's Program on Monday, June 27th, from 10:30 a.m. - noon in OCCC W203.  The program highlights my theme this year: 3-2-1 Impact! Inclusive & Impactful Teen Services and features Ady Huertas from San Diego Public, speaking about the LGBTQ+ Spectrum Club; Renee McGrath from Nassau County (NY) Library speaking about sensory theater programs for teens with autism; Nicole Pasini from San Mateo County Library will be speaking about their Book Club for Incarcerated Youth; Marian Mays from Washington Talking Book and Braille Library will be presenting "Adaptive Gaming Opportunities for Blind and Visually Impaired Teens"; Rebecca Webb from Fairbanks North Star Borough (Fairbanks, AK) School District will be presenting "Coding Camp in the Frozen North"; and Courtney Saldana from the Ovitt Family Community Library, Ontario, CA, will be talking about STeP (Skills for Teen Parents) and more!

Best wishes, safe travels, and see you in Orlando!

My name is Twanna Hodge. I'm a 2013 Scholar. This will be my first poster session as ALA! Please feel free to come and join me on Saturday, July 25, anytime between 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. My poster and I will be in The Educator Section of the exhibit hall -poster #12.

Full Title: Diversity in LIS Education: Are We Preparing Students for the 21st Century Workplace?

This poster session will detail a critical examination of the curricula of several of the top Information Schools, as determined by US News & World Report. The authors determined whether these schools are addressing issues of diversity in ways that will prepare MLIS students for the 21st century workplace, where diversity is increasing and increasingly important. The analysis is based upon the available literature as well as syllabi from the various schools and the use of Dr. Sheryl Dowlin‘s Diversity Awareness Curriculum Plan Coding Criteria. Only 20% of schools were a Level 2 (Tolerance) and 80% of schools were at Level 1 (Monocultural). There is a need to make it a priority to equip LIS graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to address the varied and systematic issues that historically and currently face their patrons. Knowledge and experience will ensure that they are not only knowledgeable but welcoming to all populations in their communities. The presentation will include a copy of the Diversity Awareness Curriculum Plan Coding Criteria, areas for improvement, and a resource list for instructors wishing to integrate more diversity-related content into their classrooms.
