    The Charleston Carnegie Public Library Board is seeking a creative and dynamic leader who will work closely with the Library Board, staff and community to serve the 21,838 people in Charleston. The successful candidate will represent the Library within the community, develop collections, manage the 14 person staff team, and provide strong financial skills to manage the budget of $480,000. The new Director will also provide vision for the library and should possess a positive, achievement-oriented attitude.


    We will select someone with excellent leadership and communications skills, innovative approaches to organizing and problem solving, strong skills in fostering community relations, knowledge of library trends and technology, and the ability to foster a team environment.

    Job Description
    GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
    Under the supervision of the Library Board, this position oversees the Library and its functions.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    The following minimum requirements are established for this position:
    1. ALA accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science.
    2. Knowledge of overall library services.
    3. Strong financial skills, including budgeting and grant writing.
    4. Strong technology skills.
    5. Customer service experience.
    6. An interest in books and information resources and attention to detail.
    7. Ability to lift, sort, shelve, and push library materials of up to 40 lbs. on an occasional basis.
    RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    The Director is responsible to the Library Board for the following activities:
    1. Greets the public with a positive and welcoming attitude.
    2. Represents the Library at community events and groups.
    3. Serves as the liaison to the Friends of the Library and the Coles County, Illinois Genealogical
    Society.
    4. Oversees the maintenance of the Library website.
    5. Oversees technology, including implementing new technology.
    6. Performs collection development duties, including ordering Library collection materials,
    unpacking and pre-processing orders, and overseeing weeding/reorganization projects.
    7. Coordinates Fundraising efforts, including seeking out and preparing grant applications.
    8. Creates and oversees the budget, enters financial transactions into New World, updates daily
    money accounting, and approves purchases.
    9. Oversees personnel, including approval of payroll, hiring, firing, evaluating, and conducting
    staff meetings/trainings.
    10. Collaborates with appropriate City Officials; attends City Department Director meetings and
    submits weekly reports to the City Manager.
    11. Supervises and delegates responsibilities to the management team.
    12. Ensures legal compliance of the Library.
    13. Develops and implements strategic plans for the Library.
    14. Creates and updates all library policies, including the personnel policy.
    15. Interprets and explains library policy and services to the staff team and the public.
    16. Evaluates and updates library services.
    17. Prepares library board packet for board meetings.
    18. Participates in library meetings and workshops; serves on committees and boards of
    professional organizations whenever feasible; keeps abreast of current trends; reads
    professional literature.
    19. Staffs the desks when needed.
    20. Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
