    ASSISTANT DIRECTOR and CHIEF of STAFF

    The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director and Chief of Staff. This position offers the opportunity to join a dynamic leadership team engaged in library initiatives that enhance student and faculty success and define the future of academic librarianship. This position reports to the Vice Provost and Director of Libraries.


    Responsibilities


    The Assistant Director and Chief of Staff manages the operations and the external and internal relations of the Office of the Vice Provost and Director of Libraries. The incumbent generates, reviews, and coordinates communication for the Director in many forms, including strategic reports and correspondence, speeches, press pieces, and other communiqués. She or he independently investigates topics in librarianship, technology, and higher education, summarizing and analyzing content for the Director; participates in the planning and development of library programs; and contributes to the preparation of grant proposals. Participates on and supports the work of the Directors Council and works closely with the Deputy Director of Libraries and other administrators. Assignments frequently require interpreting and visualizing data, developing professional presentation materials, and composing and editing documents for internal administrative use or for publication. The Assistant Director supervises 4 administrative staff and monitors the status of various projects and activities. She or he serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams and is expected to be active professionally and contribute to developments in the field.


    Required qualifications:


    ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree. Relevant experience demonstrating organizational, administrative, and analytical ability, and an understanding of the complex management, financial, and other issues facing large research libraries. Evidence of excellent oral and written communications is essential, including the ability to write clear and concise reports, create compelling letters and messages, and prepare effective multimedia presentations. Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating the qualities of initiative, maturity of judgment, and discretion. The successful candidate will be responsive to the multifaceted needs of a large service organization and its users, and will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from culturally diverse backgrounds. Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous, future-oriented environment and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities is essential, as is evidence of ongoing professional development and contribution. A valid driver license and occasional travel is required.


    The Libraries, the University, and the Area


    The NCSU Libraries has been recognized with numerous national and international awards, including the first Association of College and Research Libraries Excellence in Academic Libraries Award; the Stanford Prize for Innovation in Research Libraries and the American Institute of Architects/American Library Association Building Award for the Hunt Library; two John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Awards; and Library Journal’s Librarian of the Year, Paraprofessional of the Year, and eight Movers and Shakers awards. The library system consists of the D. H. Hill Library, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library, and branch libraries for design, natural resources, and veterinary medicine. With a staff of almost 300 FTE, the Libraries has more than 4.6 million volumes in its collection and has a total annual budget of over $30 million. The Libraries is the host site for NC LIVE, a multi-type library initiative making digital resources accessible to North Carolina residents.


    The NCSU Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries.     Salary and Benefits


    The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
