The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seeks applications for the position of Earth, Energy, and Mineral Sciences Librarian. Reporting to the head of the Earth and Mineral Science Library, this 12-month tenure-track faculty position is based in the Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) library, which is embedded in the unique and student-centered College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (http://www.ems.psu.edu/).
In collaboration with other librarians, the Earth, Energy, and Mineral Sciences Librarian is expected to actively contribute to a wide range of University Libraries initiatives ranging from pedagogically designed instruction and specialized reference, to effective outreach and scholarly communication, to collections and research data management services. This position has responsibility for partnering with Library Learning Services and STEM librarians on the creation of research and instructional services for disciplinary and interdisciplinary work related to earth, energy, and mineral sciences; collaborating with colleagues in support of research data management, visualization tools, and broader scholarly communication concerns; and developing and making accessible innovative and informative collections. In addition to these duties, tenure track library faculty are expected to devote time to research, scholarship, and service to the University and the profession.
Qualifications:
Requires Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent); academic background or relevant experience in the sciences, engineering, or one of the subject fields of the College of EMS; ability to work independently and collaboratively; initiative; strong commitment to serving the information needs of diverse users; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Interest in furthering the growth of knowledge through research is required.
Preferred qualifications include creativity; experience with outreach to geographically dispersed users; experience working with diverse populations; experience with research tools related to visualization and/or data management, reference and instructional expertise; evidence of professional service and publication; previous academic library experience.
Environment:
The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences offers degrees, both resident and online, including: geography, geosciences, meteorology, energy & business, finance & energy, sustainability policy, materials science and engineering, energy engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, mining engineering, and environmental systems engineering. The College is actively engaged in multiple interdisciplinary research centers with strengths in materials, energy, water, sustainability, earth and environment. Undergraduate enrollment stands at well over 2,000 students, graduate enrollment numbers over 500, and the 200+ faculty are joined by several hundred research associates in related institutes and centers. All academic departments offer degrees through the doctoral level and most are ranked in the top ten nationally.
The EMS Library offers a full suite of patron services, from circulation to reference, and is operated by a highly collaborative team of librarians and staff. The EMS Library personnel work closely and collaboratively with other STEM and subject-based libraries on campus and across the Commonwealth. Patrons of the EMS Library include not only faculty and students from the college and related research institutes, but also students enrolled at other Penn State campuses, students taking EMS-related online classes and those enrolled in degree and non-degree programs via Penn State’s online World Campus, as well as the general public.
The University Libraries is ranked among the top ten research libraries in North America, according to the Association for Research Libraries investment rankings, and provides services at University Park and 22 other locations throughout Pennsylvania as well as online. We serve approximately 6,300 faculty and 46,000 students at University Park, and more than 95,000 students system-wide. The University Libraries consists of approximately 120 faculty and enjoys extensive technological resources and research support services.

Compensation and Benefits:
Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include liberal vacation, excellent insurance and health care coverage, state or TIAA/CREF retirement options, and educational privileges. In addition, faculty in the University Libraries are afforded funds for professional development travel annually. Faculty may be asked to travel as official representatives of the Libraries to certain events and those trips are reimbursed at full cost within limits established by the University.
