    GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


    Madison Public Library seeks a creative and innovative Youth Services Supervisor who will provide direction for designing and implementing a focused and strategically planned youth services program.  This is a leadership position that will be responsible for the coordination, development, and delivery of a highly responsive program to meet the needs of our community's youth.  The position will require skills in extensive relationship building with local schools, youth advocates, community organizations, and families. The Youth Services Supervisor will serve as a leader in Madison Public Library's commitment to racial equity and social justice, and will plan, implement and promote programs and services with this focus in mind.


    The Youth Services Supervisor will lead important initiatives involving early learning, promotion of reading, out-of-school-time program implementation, and will create opportunities for teens to be career, college and community ready.  In addition, the Youth Services Supervisor will pursue advocacy activities for the Library to include public presentations, development of partnerships, media communications, and representation of the Library at community functions and conferences.


    The Youth Services Supervisor directs a talented team of professional youth and teen librarians, and support staff that provide citywide youth services activities at nine library locations, as well as outreach to schools and community organizations.     


    Madison Public Library is a dynamic organization that features a flagship Central Library space with a 10,000 square foot youth area, a vibrant teen section, a fully equipped media lab, and our Bubbler program, which focuses on hands-on learning objectives. In addition to the Central Library, we have 8 other locations. Our Meadowridge Library includes a community kitchen to support youth nutrition and food preparation programs. Our Pinney Library, set for a new location in 2017, is doubling in size and will feature an innovative PlayLab that incorporates early literacy principles and serves both children and families and early childhood educators and researchers. As a member of the library management team, creativity, innovation, imagination, and going beyond the traditional or expected is encouraged at MPL.   


     


    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Oversee the Function and Direction of Youth Services:


    •Provide strategic direction for department programs.


    •Ensure that youth services are provided in a skillful and professional manner.


    •Be creative and proficient in the utilization of technology for the delivery of youth services.    


    •Develop and implement evaluation metrics to monitor program effectiveness.


    •Collaborate with neighborhood library supervisors to ensure both neighborhood library and community needs are being met.


    •Determine departmental priorities and staffing.


    •Oversee programming and supply budgets.


    Develop and Manage Community Partnerships:


    •Skillfully establish and strengthen community collaborations and partnerships.


    •Inspire, guide, and support individuals and organizations who serve youth in the community.


    •Determine sustainability methods for partnerships.


    •Explore grant possibilities to fund partnerships.


    •Serve on community committees addressing youth and family issues.


    •Value the potential and uniqueness of each child and each family.     


    •Embrace a commitment to equity and diversity.


     Serve as a Member of the Library Management Team:


    •Be a spokesperson for issues surrounding children and families.


    •Demonstrate passion for the mission and vision of Madison Public Library in the delivery of youth services.


    •Collaborate with other library managers to support the library's mission and values.


    •Present to Management Team regarding programs, partnerships, and strategic priorities and direction.


    •Provide input to the library budgeting process regarding needs of youth services department.


    •Model exceptional performance and presentation skills.


    •Develop knowledge of city hiring processes and practices.


    Actively Participate in Professional Development and Maintain Knowledge of Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Youth:


    •Advocate for the importance of early learning for children.


    •Participate in local, state, and national conferences and meetings to acquire and share best practices in youth services.


    •Train library staff on youth and family issues.


    •Communicate youth services mission and priorities to non-youth services staff.


    •Maintain a professional knowledge of baby, child and adolescent development and learning.


    •Be conversant with curricular trends and school district activities.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


    •Thorough knowledge of library science theories, principles, practices and terminology applicable to a public library. 


    •Thorough knowledge of professional library reference and collection development strategies and resources. 


    •Thorough knowledge of automated and manual library systems. 


    •Thorough knowledge of and ability to use computer software applicable to the duties of the position. 


    •Working knowledge of public administration principles and practices.


    •Working knowledge of the full range of supervisory principles and practices, labor relations and personnel management.


    •Ability to develop and implement major library programs with a high degree of judgment and expertise. 


    •Ability to actively participate in the general administration of the library; to formulate long-range and strategic plans; and to provide management leadership.


    •Ability to plan, develop and direct the programs, functions, and services of a library division. 


    •Ability to develop library operating procedures and processes. 


    •Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    Training and Experience:


    Four years of advanced-level professional library work providing leadership, coordination and/or management of staff, library collections and assigned facilities.  This work must include at least two years experience in Youth Services and/or Community Engagement.  Such experience would normally be gained after graduation from an accredited library school with a Master's Degree in Library or Information Science. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 


    Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.


    Physical Requirements:


    The incumbent in this position may be expected to travel to the different library locations throughout the City of Madison.
