    Position TITLE: Associate Director, Health Sciences Library


    REPORTING TO: Associate Dean of University Libraries Director of the Health Sciences Library

    HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY:


    Health Sciences Library (HSL) is a national leader in the development and application of innovative strategies and technologies to meet information and research needs for the benefit of patients and communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. The HSL supports the education, research, and clinical programs of the six UW health science schools; UW Medicine Accountable Care Network (ACN), as well as the wider interdisciplinary biomedical community of the University. The UW Medicine Accountable Care Network spans 46 cities and neighborhoods, and includes: 1,000+ primary care providers; 4,000+ specialists; 1,000+ clinics; 19 hospitals; 33+ urgent care clinics; and 19 emergency departments. In partnership with the leadership of the UW Medicine Research Information Technology (RIT), Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS), UW Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education (BIME), HEALWA, and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR), the Health Sciences Library is working to advance an institutional, regional and multi-disciplinary strategy to promote precision medicine and support translational research. The Health Sciences Library actively collaborates with campus partners to support curricular and practice transformation of the health delivery system through investment in knowledge, training and tools. The partners work together to develop new, innovative tools for research and data management, to support existing tools, and to educate and train faculty, staff, and students in the effective use of these tools. This partnership extends the reach of the Health Sciences Library in order to disseminate information and awareness of the suite of resources and tools available at the University to the region.


     


    General Description:


    The Health Sciences Library currently has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director to inspire the profession, to advance practice-based evidence (PBE), interprofessional education (IPE), translational research, big data, and clinical information research at the University and in the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) region. Reporting to the Associate Dean of University Libraries and Director of the Health Sciences Library, the Associate Director provides overall direction for the advancement of the Health Sciences Library by providing leadership for librarians and library services that influence and support the mission and goals of the UW Libraries. These include creating programs, activities and initiatives that leverage health information access, big data, and clinical research through investment in knowledge, training and tools; enhancing marketing and communications with internal and external constituencies; and promoting the Library’s reach in the state and region.


     


    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:


     


    · Provides leadership and manages the Health Sciences Library librarians and staff in collaboration with the Associate Dean and Director of the Health Sciences Library.


    · As part of the Libraries-wide planning process, establishes goals, objectives, and strategies for the Health Sciences Library’s curricular, clinical, translational, and research informatics activities annually.


    · Provides dynamic management and leadership in human resources, financial operations, institutional reporting, statistics, advancement, and marketing and communications.


    · Serves as a member of the Health Sciences Library Management Team and participates on other administrative and committees as required.


    · Directs the day-to-day operations of a dynamic organization of more than 30 librarians and staff in the Health Sciences working in four departments.


    · Develops strategies for securing support and funding for future initiatives and programs; participates in advancement activities by cultivating relationships with donors.


    · Regularly evaluates programs, assess progress toward goals, and reports on results to the Health Sciences Library Management Team and committees.


    · Directs and manages partnerships and shared resources with HEALWA, Health Sciences Schools, and ITHS; develops strategies for securing institutional, public, and private support.


    · Builds strong and mutually beneficial relationships between the Library and external audiences such as donors, alumni, and state and community leaders.


    · Contributes to the administration of the Libraries by participating in the development of recommendations for Libraries-wide policies, planning capital projects and library renovations.


    · Oversees internal and external communications, including social media.


     


    Required qualifications:


    · Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree;


    · Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the work place;


    · At least 7 years of supervisory and management experience;


    · Relevant research experience, publication, teaching or other significant contributions to the profession that demonstrates substantial subject mastery.


    · Demonstrated success in determining own and/or team's priorities based on user needs, performance objectives and overall organizational goals;


    · Experience in project management and managing business and/or library operations in a university setting;


    · Demonstrated understanding of the evolving scholarly communications environment and open access initiatives;


    · Ability and willingness to work cooperatively in an evolving technological environment;


    · In-depth knowledge of information and web technologies;


    · Excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills;


    · Excellent knowledge of current issues and opportunities in health sciences education, clinical care, and public and private funding opportunities.


     


    Preferred Qualifications:


    · Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professional credential (AHIP)


    · Successful record of managing library renovations and working on capital projects.


    · Experience developing data services using current and emerging technologies.


     


    SALARY:


    $72,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background. An administrative stipend will be established at the time of hire.


    RANK:


    Position will be at the rank of Associate Librarian or Librarian depending on qualifications and background.


    BENEFITS:


    Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
