Online Board Meeting: Agenda Item 2-Librarian of Congress Confirmation Support
As we are currently convened in an online meeting, I would like to include an additional agenda item which has just come to our attention today regarding the Librarian of Congress. The Office of Government Relations (OGR) for the ALA Washington Office has invited ALA divisions to endorse a letter to the Senate Rules Committee asking them to rapidly vote to recommend to the full Senate that Dr. Carla Hayden be confirmed immediately to serve as the nation’s 14th Librarian of Congress.
OGR has informed the ALSC office that the Senate Rules Committee has just scheduled Dr. Hayden’s confirmation hearing for this coming Wednesday, April 20 at 2:15 pm (EST) and that “while we do not expect Dr. Hayden’s nomination to be derailed, some groups have publicly questioned her leadership and technology credentials, while others have suggested that she doesn’t have what they consider to be the requisite ‘scholarly’ background.”
As part of OGR’s efforts toward a successful confirmation of Dr. Hayden they have “circulated the attached joint letter broadly to many other non-profit organizations and educational institutions" as a show of support, and ALSC may choose to be a signatory to this letter.
Due to the extremely short turnaround time (a response is needed to OGR this Friday, 4/15), the other issue currently on the table, and that same day’s Arbuthnot Lecture, with the Board’s consensus I would like to move directly to a vote on supporting or not supporting the attached letter. Please review the letter, raise any objections to the vote below, and, if you have no objections to voting, cast your vote by 10:00 a.m. Central on Friday.
