Web Services Librarian
The Mansfield Library at the University of Montana (UM) seeks a collegial, creative, enterprising, collaborative, and user-focused librarian for the position of Web Services Librarian. This is a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. The ideal candidate will be service-oriented, forward-looking, and innovative, and will play a key role in overseeing the content strategy for the Library’s web site.
Reporting to the Head of the Information and Research Services Division, the Web Services Librarian will also provide research and instruction services to faculty, students, and staff, and will partner with faculty to develop and expand online library services to support research and the educational mission of the University. Active engagement in the library and information science profession as a whole is encouraged and supported.
Major Responsibilities
- Provide organization and ongoing maintenance for the library web presence which includes the main website, exhibitions, and social media applications to ensure the web presence is relevant, accurate, user-centered and accessible
- Understand the user experience and conduct ongoing user research and/or usability studies to determine if the web presence meets the needs of users in discovering and accessing library instruction, collections and services
- Create, update, and maintain web content focused on user services, and create web-based assignment and research guides
- Assemble, distribute, and evaluate web analytics focused on user services
- Audit, assess, and improve existing web content, identify new content needs and design content workflow and governance structures
- Collaborate with others to create and implement web-based services, including tutorials, podcasts, blogs, mobile applications and dynamic content
- Work closely with Unit Heads and the library’s IT and Systems on the library’s web projects
- Work closely with others to develop web branding and virtual outreach, including web promotions, email campaigns, etc. and establish and promote the use of a web style-guide, web policies and branding guidelines
- Serve as the library expert and representative of user experience with the web presence and for the improvement of the user virtual experience
- Provide reference in-person and online, in regular evening and weekend reference duties during the semester
- Develop collaborative ongoing relationships with faculty, students and staff to support teaching, learning and research as liaison to specific departments
- Assist in instruction and collection development with liaison departments
Required Qualifications
- MLS from ALA-accredited institution
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate discussion about web design, content and technology
- Experience with and knowledge of current web and digital content technologies, including evaluation and analytics
- Knowledge of user-experience and usability design on library websites
- Ability to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments as a team member and independently
- Knowledge, skills, or experience in web content development through course works, internships, and other venues
- Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with multiple stakeholders
- Strong commitment to serving diverse user populations
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with ADA standards
- Experience with HTML5 and CSS, PHP and JavaScript
- Experience with Universal Design principles
Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time, 12-month appointment, and tenure-track faculty position, with a minimum salary of $47,000 annually, depending on qualification and experience.
