IAmRUSA Interviewee for the Week of June 9th is
Ask him a question!
My name is Daniel A. Sabol. I work as the Evening and Weekend Librarian for the Mortola Library of Pace University and Adjunct Professor at Mercy College (NY). I began my library career as a clerk in a public library about ten years ago and found my passion to help build knowledge in others. This work drove me to obtain my MSLIS in 2011 and pursue employment as a librarian. Currently, I am a mentor with ACRL NY and find myself trying to motivate others to pursue a career as a librarian. I pride myself on customer service, keeping up with the latest library trends and striving to ensure that all of our users realize the library is the center of knowledge. I currently live in Dobbs Ferry, NY with my wife, Amy and twin daughters, Kate and Elizabeth. In the little spare time I have I enjoy music (Rap, Regge, 80’s freestyle…), customizing my car, reading and tattoos. I look forward to all of your questions!!!
Would you mind talking a little bit about how the mentor work with ACRL NY works? Does it tie in with local schools or are you approached by people interested in the field. I'm a huge believer in the benefits of mentoring relationships and would love to learn more about how that plays out for you in your work.
The ACRL NY mentorship is a terrific program which pairs new librarians with those who have been working for some time. ACRL set this program up and sent out an email requesting anybody interested to forward a CV and cover letter, which I did. I was notified about two weeks later that I was selected and was provided my mentee's information. My mentee is rather local so we meet occasionally and we discuss different topics, some that are provided to me by ACRL and some I feel are important to his career path and librarianship in general. I do find that I work a bit harder to learn a new area such as copyright to better discuss it with him. So it is a win win for both of us. I also find that I know a few people at different college's so I am able to use my contacts to provide my mentee with a much needed referral in our current job market. To participate in this program I have provided the link:http://acrlny.org/about2/mentoring-program/ I hope this answers your questions.
