Event Midwinter Business Meeting

by Maurine McCourry on Fri, Jan 6, 2017 at 07:40 pm

The business meeting at Midwinter will take place during the last 10 minutes of the interest group session.  Following is the agenda I've submitted to ACRL.  The meeting will be short, but there's a lot to cover.  Please feel free to comment here on any of it, or send me a message at mmccourry@hillsdale.edu.  The more we can get done in this virtual space ahead of time, the better!

    7. 2016 Midwinter: Lightning Rounds
    8. Spring of 2016: Email discussion regarding the possibilities of becoming a Section; no consensus was reached, but there was some interest in 3 possibilities: 1) Becoming a Section; 2) Not becoming a section in order to keep the work manageable, and to avoid duplicating the efforts of ALCTS; 3) Becoming an ALCTS affiliate or working in another formal way with ALCTS.
    9. 2016 Annual: Three presentations
    10. Anything missing?
  2. Plans for the future:
    1. Immediate need for current Incoming Convener to take over as Convener following Annual this summer.
    2. Also immediate need for Incoming Convener starting after Annual.
    3. Need for ideas for direction: We have the numbers to become a Section, but maybe not the desire. The discussion should continue, though, and in the interim, we should pursue appropriate projects as a group.
    4. There will be some sort of social gathering at ACRL. Discussion?

Event Midwinter Meeting and Program

The ACRL Technical Services Interest Group will sponsor the following two presentations during its ALA Midwinter 2017 meeting in Atlanta, Saturday, January 21, 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, in Room A304 of the Georgia World Congress Center:

Title: Using EBSCO’s Usage Consolidation to Supply Usage Data in a Serials Review

Summary: In 2016, University of Maryland Libraries underwent a comprehensive serials review.  Without an ERM, supplying usage data to subject librarians was a challenge. University of Maryland Libraries chose to use the ESBCO’s Usage Consolidation tool to meet this challenge. This presentation will discuss the gathering and loading of data into the tool and how the tool was used by subject librarians to evaluate journals for cancellation.

Presenters: Leigh Ann DePope, Electronic Services Librarian, and Kelley O’Neal, Geographical Sciences Liaison Librarian, University of Maryland

Title: Integrating User Experience into Technical Services Workflows

Summary: Staff in technical services learn to complete tasks and develop an understanding of how to get things done within the systems that they work. Their focus can be very narrow on step-by-step processes and meeting requirements for software and institutional systems. It can be very challenging to get buy-in on new approaches to delivering content or services. Library users don’t always find our systems to be easy to use, clear, or available in the places that they are working. As we redesign how we are providing services our staff members are sometimes caught between getting their work done in efficient and logical ways and making things better for the user. Having staff use the tools and materials that they are constructing and purchasing can help them to understand why they are being asked to do things differently and invite them in as collaborators in creating the future library.

Presenter: R. Cecilia Knight, Acquisitions and Discovery Librarian, Grinnell College Libraries

Please join us!  A short business meeting will follow the presentations and discussion.
