RFP for Library Services Platform
The University of Wisconsin System has completed its RFP process for acquiring a new LSP. System administration signed a contract with Ex Libris for Alma at the end of December. It is anticipated that the first meeting with staff at Ex Libris will be held in February and work will begin on setting up a schedule for migration at that time. All 13 four year campuses (including UW—Madison and UW—Milwaukee) and all 13 two year campuses will migrate to the new system.
Wiley ebook PDA project
UW System libraries have initated a Wiley ebook PDA Pilot. The pilot will provide access initially to more than 13,000 ebook titles with additional titles loaded each month and will run from November 2013 through October 2014. The UW System EBook Subcommittee explored various vendors/models before setting up the pilot. It will not operate the way most PDA models (i.e. purchase after x number of uses). Use of all the titles will be monitored throughout the project, and at the end, use will be evaluated by the Ebook subcommittee and titles will be purchased at that time. Titles purchased will be purchased for all campuses. UW System Administration is providing $100,000 for the pilot.
Offsite storage facility, etc.
Ground has been broken for our offsite facility which will be built about 10 miles from campus in Verona, WI. We hope to begin moving materials out there sometime in June or July. Work continues on developing guidelines for what materials will go into the facility, along with continuing work on de-duping serials holdings across campus. Discussions are beginning on the withdrawal of print serial titles for which we have electronic perpetual access and that are also ILL friendly. Some of these titles will be held in print at the CIC Shared Print Repository which is on the campus of Indiana University.
Copyright clearance work
The library has devoted 1 FTE towards copyright determination for U.S. published materials with dates between 1923 and 1963 contained in HathiTrust. Just this week, HathiTrust partners, including UW–Madison, completed the review process of US works. Partners are currently being trained on how to review the copyright of foreign works from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, which are not only mostly in English but also have similar copyright policies to the United States.
Rebecca M. Blank became chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in July 2013. Leading UW--Madison represents a return to academia for Blank. From 2009 to 2013, she served in top positions at the U.S. Department of Commerce. She started as under secretary for economic affairs, and then was named deputy secretary and acting secretary of the agency, managing nearly 45,000 employees and a $10 billion budget.
Since last ALA, we have had a few additional retirements as well as new hires to replace earlier announced retirements. New hires include: Henry Thompson (Electronic Resources cataloger), Taryn Resnick (Electronic Resources Acquisitions Librarian), Karla Strand (Gender and Women’s Studies Librarian), and Bhaswati Sarma (Information Processing Consultant).
