  • 1.  UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Needs to be ratified-please help

    Posted Aug 21, 2013 02:26 PM

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child needs to be ratified by the U.S. Senate. This treaty is the legally binding international instrument to guarantee the basic human rights of children – right to survival; to develop the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. This document was reviewed during the Reagan administration and signed by President Clinton, but never ratified by the U.S. Senate. One hundred ninety-three members of the United Nations have ratified this treaty. Only Somalia, South Sudan and the United States have not! What an embarrassment for our country – the country of the document’s origin!

USBBY has posted a petition on We the People to encourage our Senate to ratify the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. We need 150 signatures in the next 10 days to keep this petition live and then  10,000 signatures by Sept. 18 for this petition to be sent to the Senate. It takes a minute to register and then e-sign. If you agree with the need, can you share the info and the link?

    Thank you,

    Doris

    Dear EMIERT,

I just got on ALA Connect for EMIERT and noticed this petition.  I've read Kathy East's eloquent letter to President Obama.  What was his response and where are we with this? Maybe we need to launch another petition.  Just let me know how I can help.  The children of the world deserve it.

    Thanks,

    Ann Crewdson
