LITA + SWFA = ?

The new president of the Science Fiction Writers of America, Steven Gould, is a friend-of-a-friend, and our mutual friend introduced us on the theory that LITA and SFWA doubtless have interests in common.  So it looks like I'll be having a meeting with the SFWA communications officer sometime soon.

...does anyone have any opinions of what I should say?  Any of you want to be in the loop for scheduling that meeting?

Outgoing president John Scalzi posted a couple days ago that he will no longer participate in conventions that don't have an anti-harassment policy.  A lot of people from the SF community have signed on in support. The ALA Conference committee is discussing creating such a policy, but I'm not sure how long and convoluted a process that is. It might be something to get common understanding on, as we hope to continue to be able to have SFWA author participation, but might not have an official policy in place by Annual 2014.

I haven't gone searching through the interwebs, so apologies if this is already addressed...  But it would be interesting to know where SFWA stands on ALA's new initiative Authors for Library Ebooks http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/a4le If they would be willing to publicize this or endorse this for their authors that would be a plus.

Great idea!  I'll ask them.

FYI for everyone -- John Scalzi has now gotten 600+ signatories on that pledge that Jenny linked to (i.e. not to speak at cons that lack anti-harassment policies).  This is starting to feel to me like a pretty significant risk to LITA's ability to attract the kinds of high-profile speakers we have in the past.

Good for Mr. Scalzi! I'm reading one of his books right now - good stuff. So ... ALA doesn't have an anti-harassment policy? Really? That, I'd be pretty surprised at??

Not that anyone knows of.  Question's come up a few times over the last six months on Twitter, and no one (including @shifted) could point to any such policy.  So...nope.  But maybe that's changing?

Well Jenny did say "The ALA Conference committee is discussing creating such a policy, but I'm not sure how long and convoluted a process that is."

Is this something that Council should be discussing?  Aaron? Lauren?  This would seem to be a larger issue than just conferences...  And in looking at the links that Mr. Scalzi provided it seemed that he was more concerned about Fan conventions rather than professional association conferences.  That doesn't mean ALA shouldn't have one but there may be a different focus.

My opinion: go be awesome! There are clearly several things to talk about.

Please read the two documents here: http://connect.ala.org/node/170210 and the Conflict of Interest statement.

The Conference Committee is taking up the discussion on a Code of Conduct, and I think the LITA Board is well-placed to provide input on that.  I do not know if we can informally adopt such a thing in the interim (probably not, honestly), but it's an issue we should take up and be ready to advise ALA on.

Thanks to Andromeda for starting that conversation.
